What reviewers say

Visitors praise Heldenbar for its cool, easy-going atmosphere, good house music, cheap drinks, and riverside location, making it a popular Wednesday night hangout. However, some complain about strict and confusing toilet policies, a violent bouncer, and the smell of smoke inside, while others find the music quality inconsistent and the venue often very crowded.

About this place Heldenbar

Heldenbar is a non-profit gay bar located on Sihlquai in Zürich, offering a refreshingly alternative take on the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife scene. Operating on Wednesday evenings, this venue deliberately positions itself outside the commercial gay bar mainstream, creating space for a more grassroots, community-focused experience. It's the kind of place where the focus is on connection and enjoyment rather than profit, which shapes everything from the programming to the overall atmosphere. The musical programming reflects the non-commercial ethos—DJs range from professionals to enthusiasts, and the style shifts week to week, so you never quite know what sonic direction the night will take. This unpredictability is part of the charm for those seeking something genuinely different from the standard club circuit. If dancing isn't your thing, the venue's riverside location on the banks of the Limmat offers a perfect alternative: grab your drink and step outside for a chat with fellow visitors, or challenge friends to table football inside. The vibe is relaxed and inclusive, prioritizing genuine social interaction over pretense. For LGBTQ+ travellers exploring Zürich's gay scene, Heldenbar represents the kind of authentic, community-driven space that often becomes a memorable highlight of any visit. It's worth planning your Wednesday evening around if you're looking to experience the city's non-commercial gay culture and meet locals in a welcoming, unpretentious setting. More information and updates are available on their website.

I love this place for the Wednesday evening. Perfect location to meet friends and new people, nice dj and great cocktails always the place to be during the Zurich working week.

The party was a bit lackluster.

The club's atmosphere isn't techno or house, nor is it electro or chill. The DJ plays whatever sounds comfortable to him, but without a real rhythm. Nothing that really gets you going. Card payments aren't accepted. It's best not to arrive before 9 pm, as it's pretty quiet before then anyway. Bring cash – preferably in Swiss francs. The club isn't as global or international as some posts suggest: it's really more for locals. Nevertheless, it's a great spot to meet locals, especially students!
