✓ Same-sex relations legal ✓ Same-Sex Marriage ✓ Pride Events ⚖️ Same-sex marriage legal in Switzerland since 1 July 2022, following a national referendum on 26 September 2021 in which 64.1% of voters approved the measure one of the most emphatic democratic endorsements of marriage equality anywhere in the world. Switzerland thereby became the 30th country globally to legalise same-sex marriage, and the first to do so by popular vote at the national level. Full joint adoption rights are available to same-sex married couples. Trans legal gender change was simplified in January 2022 under the new Civil Code provisions, removing the requirement for surgery or sterilisation and allowing change by declaration before the civil registrar. Anti-discrimination protections were extended in 2020 to explicitly cover sexual orientation under the Swiss Criminal Code, following a referendum in which 63.1% voted yes. Gender identity protections have been discussed and are partly addressed through cantonal and federal administrative practice. Switzerland's federal structure means that implementation can vary slightly by canton, but the national legal framework is strong. Safety rating: 88/100.
