About this place The Lugger

The Lugger is a small hotel and restaurant on the harbour at Portloe, a fishing village on Cornwall's Roseland Peninsula, about 30 minutes by car from Truro. The building is a 17th-century former inn, and many rooms look out over the cove. It is a mainstream gay-friendly hotel, not a gay venue. Portloe is tiny and the lanes in are narrow, so arrive by car in daylight and expect very little nightlife. The South West Coast Path runs right past the hotel. Google rating 4.5 from about 530 reviews.

Popped in for a coffee and something to eat, were shown to a table and then ignored! A member of staff walked past us (twice!), said hello and walked on outside. We walked out after he didn't bother to take our order the second time. We passed the same staff member on the way out and he just said 'bye'. Don't bother with this place, go to The Ship, just up the road - brilliant service and lovely food!

Lacklustre. Trading on a former reputation. Tired. Shabby. Disengaged staff, off vibe. Bland food (chef stood outside restaurant smoking while smoke wafted into us eating!) Stayed during heatwave & room hadn't been aired, windows not open, small desk fan in cupbd but totally inadequate, heavy duvet but no sheet provided. Neighbours walked across our small terrace. Housekeeping not great, seemed lacking in commitment, left our room with a very strong smell in bin which I put outside! Furnishings, paintwork inside needed TLC. Stayed previously circa 2023 when meal was fantastic, staff upbeat, but this time it was hollowed out... bar the young receptionist who brought sorely needed energy & enthusiasm. And expensive... Complained to older receptionist who offered apology but nothing further heard. Otherwise stunning location in bay but beware the noise from locals in buggies late at night.

With an amazing restaurant and delightful views, this lovely hotel on the slipway at idyllic fishing village Portloe is one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets on the South West Coast Path. Well worth a visit.
