LGBT Health and Wellbeing

LGBT Health and Wellbeing was founded in Edinburgh in 2003 as Scotland's first dedicated LGBTQ+ health charity, at a moment when Scottish healthcare had no coordinated response to the specific needs of the queer population. It has grown into Scotland's largest LGBTQ+ health organisation, with headquarters in Edinburgh and satellite offices in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness, and serves approximately 5,000 Scots annually across mental health, sexual health, substance use, elder-care and refugee-support programmes. The organisation's political achievements include the 2014 marriage-equality campaign (LGBT Health drafted much of the evidence base used in the Scottish Parliament committee hearings), the 2017 Scottish gender-recognition reform (again, with the organisation's clinical evidence submission a key input), and the ongoing 2020s work on inclusive Scottish elder-care provision. The Edinburgh headquarters at Howe Street coordinates all of that policy work. Since 2010 the organisation has occupied fitted-out ground-floor and basement premises at 9 Howe Street in New Town — a converted Georgian townhouse holding counselling rooms, meeting rooms, a small resource library, and the organisational offices. The premises are wheelchair accessible via the rear courtyard. Open Monday-Friday 09:00-17:00 for drop-in reception; counselling and specific programmes by appointment. Free. Charlotte Square is a five-minute walk south. On the Edinburgh queer heritage walk this is the natural community-institution stop — combine with a walk east along George Street to Broughton Street's bar strip for a full-day heritage-and-nightlife circuit.
