About this place The Dome

The Dome is a mainstream restaurant and bar on George Street in Edinburgh's New Town. It is gay-friendly, not a gay venue. It fills a former bank headquarters with a columned portico and a glass-domed main hall. People come for the room as much as the food: set menus, steaks and sharing boards in the Grill Room, plus cocktails at the central bar. It works well for a birthday lunch, an anniversary dinner or a pre-theatre meal, and the Christmas decorations draw crowds every winter. Prices are mid-range for the setting. Book for weekend evenings and December, when walk-ins often get turned away. It's a few minutes' walk from St Andrew Square and Princes Street.

Five stars for the excellent service, food and ambiance! We went in without reservations (told them I tried to call yesterday but couldn't get through) and Daria at the front desk was kind enough to suggest trying the bar so we can at least have The Dome experience, and let us have a look at the menu. We did seat ourselves at the bar, but not even 15 minutes later, she approached us and said there had been a dinner reservation cancellation and if we still wanted a table. We then ordered the Sunday Roast (lamb) - a must-try, the steamed cod (it was good but I'm not so much a fan of the bean-based side), the Scottish mussels for starters (loved it!) and the toffee pudding as well as the chocolate dome for dessert - both so good we know we will order them again if we ever get to come back. Special shout out to the young lady who waited on us, Jagoda - she was friendly and yet somehow knew how not to overdo it. That level of service is the kind that makes me come back :) Date of visit: 16th August 2026, Sunday [The Fringe Festival]
