L'Hôtel Scottys à Hambourg

We stayed at this hotel for the last three days, and I feel compelled to write this review because an incident today prompted it—more on that later. The location is very good, being close to the city center. A little further along, there's a fenced-off area where drug addicts are constantly present, which is important for families to know. However, there are no such contacts directly at the hotel. I had booked by phone and asked if we could check in early, and this was agreed upon for 2:00 PM. The phone contact was very friendly. When we arrived at reception on June 18th, we encountered unenthusiastic and unhelpful staff who then tried to check us in again at 3:00 PM. Okay, friendliness isn't measurable, but the women had no feel for guests. I had to ask for everything multiple times. Nothing was communicated proactively, as if we had a single extra request. We definitely didn't feel welcome. This is incomprehensible after a five-hour drive and prior arrangements. So we waited an hour after asking again where and if we were even allowed to wait at the hotel. We were assigned a parking space in the underground garage, which was convenient and worked out well. However, it's a bit tight if you have a large car. The room seemed very good at first glance. Overall, the rooms are inviting and cozy. However, there were signs of wear and tear that became quite noticeable upon closer inspection, especially the lack of a seal on the shower cubicle. No matter how carefully you showered, it always flooded, and the water didn't dry properly. A rubber seal under the door would have solved the problem. The lack of a shelf in the shower is the least of our worries... it definitely didn't create a comfortable atmosphere. This problem had already been mentioned several times by other guests. Breakfast on June 19th was excellent, plentiful, and the staff member clearly understood what service in the hotel industry means. Friendly, attentive, and approachable... she wanted us to feel comfortable. A huge compliment to this lady. Unfortunately, it was the exception. There was once again a lack of enthusiasm at breakfast this morning, and the service at the buffet left much to be desired. A small example: no drip trays under all the juice carafes... the result was everything swimming in juice... And then there was that all-important smile... it was missing... I would assume there's a basic lack of understanding of the hotel industry. What does the manager have to say about this? The icing on the cake was the woman who reset the tables and cleared them beforehand. Sorry, she was completely unsuited for that position. Anyone who doesn't want to deal with people, families, and children really shouldn't work in this field. She had an annoyed, almost angry expression and rolled her eyes at the children running around... right in front of us, and she didn't even try to hide it. That's unacceptable. Especially since a large proportion of the guests were families with children. Check-out was just as bad... no one asked how our stay was, I had to ask again if I was finished, and again, there was no proactive communication from the staff. All in all, I didn't find the price of around €150 justified; I've gotten much better for less than half the price. Ultimately, this feeling of being unwelcome is also the reason why I won't book this hotel again and can't recommend it. Besides, there are plenty of alternatives in Hamburg. I wish you all the best in reflecting on your experience; you can always learn from it.

Short distances to the city

The hotel makes a modern and appealing impression overall. Unfortunately, my stay began with a negative experience. Despite having a cost coverage agreement from an external provider, which I presented again, I was initially expected to pay myself. While this misunderstanding was clarified and confirmed the following morning, I found the communication during this process unpleasant. The conversations seemed unprofessional and, unfortunately, also unfriendly. The staff at breakfast were a completely different story: very friendly, attentive, and polite. They deserve high praise. The breakfast itself was varied, plentiful, and of good quality. The hotel's location is generally very good. However, the immediate surroundings were less than ideal, as there was an unpleasant smell on the street in some areas. The room was clean and well-maintained. However, the shower seems to have been poorly designed, as the entire bathroom floor flooded when I showered. Furthermore, the air conditioning was difficult to regulate satisfactorily. Overall, there are some positive aspects, especially the breakfast and the location, but the unfriendly service at check-in and the following day significantly detracted from the overall impression.

The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Hamburg Central Station. The rooms are modern, clean, and functionally furnished. The mattresses are firm, but we slept very well. Showering in the bathroom is a bit tricky, as the shower walls are quite short, so the bathroom gets wet quickly. It's manageable with care, though. The room has air conditioning. We didn't book breakfast, so we can't comment on that. Check-in was friendly and straightforward, starting at 3:00 PM. Tip: if there are spaces available, there are public parking spaces on the street directly in front of the hotel for just €10 per day at the parking meter! The best way to get there by subway/S-Bahn is from the Berliner Tor station (about 5-10 minutes). Walking to the main train station (also 5-10 minutes) takes you past a large area known for drug use and homelessness (police are always present), so it's not recommended in the evenings. The hotel is located on a main street, but it's still relatively quiet. We would definitely book it again.

This was our first time at "The Scotty." What we remember most is the very large and comfortable bed. We haven't slept so well in a hotel in a long time. The rooms are well-equipped, nothing is lacking, they are very clean, and a good size. The British-themed lobby has a certain charm, although it is rather dark. We stayed for one night and will definitely consider this hotel again for our next trip to Hamburg.
