Same-sex partnerships are recognised in Lituanie, though full marriage may still be pending. The Legal Status panel above has the current position. Lithuania decriminalised same-sex relations in 1993 and has had a comprehensive Equal Treatment Law covering sexual orientation since 2005. The constitution defines marriage as between a man and a woman, and for two decades parliament refused every partnership bill. The courts broke the deadlock: in 2024 the Constitutional Court struck down the 'minors protection' provisions that had been used to restrict LGBTQ information, step-child adoption became available through case law, and in 2025 the court ruled that limiting partnership to opposite-sex couples was unconstitutional, allowing same-sex couples to register partnerships through the courts until the Seimas passes a law. Joint adoption is still not possible. Legal gender change requires a diagnosis certificate but no surgery since 2022. Public opinion is among the EU's least supportive, with around 22 percent backing same-sex marriage in 2023, though Vilnius Pride draws several thousand and goes off peacefully. Vilnius has a small scene with a couple of bars and the Soho club; Kaunas and Klaipėda have almost nothing visible. Visitors are safe and rarely bothered.
