Moresby Hall

The hotel is very beautiful, nicely furnished, and centrally located. The rooms are comfortable and well-equipped. We were there because friends were celebrating their wedding at the hotel. Unfortunately, things went pretty badly. We all wanted to have dinner together on Friday, which the hotel told my friends would be no problem. But that didn't work out because they didn't specify a specific time. They didn't ask us when we discussed it. The food, which didn't arrive very simultaneously, was mediocre. The drinks weren't brought until after dinner. The water was tap water and smelled strongly of chlorine. On the evening of the reception, the bar was booked until 1:30 a.m. But shortly before midnight, the bar was closed because, apparently, they didn't have a license to serve drinks after midnight. There was supposed to be a wedding breakfast at 11 a.m. on Sunday, at a time set by the hotel. On Saturday evening, they said there would be no wedding breakfast, breakfast would be between 8 and 10 a.m., and there was no discussion about it. We arranged to have breakfast at 9:00 a.m., but there weren't enough tables and chairs for everyone. So, I can't recommend a wedding there. My girlfriend was very disappointed.

The fairly recent change to quality pub grub over the mast few years has worked and it seems popular.

We had such a beautiful stay at this hotel. The atmosphere is very calm, and there really aren’t many places like this. We have a reactive dog, and honestly couldn’t have dreamed of a better place to stay. The staff were all super friendly, Emily booked us amazing room and Dave, what a great guy! We will definitely come back!

Visited on Sunday 10th August 25 for a Sunday dinner, we ate at 7pm. I was so looking forward to eating here after good reviews. But it was one of the worst Sunday dinners I’ve had. The beef was chewy, the roast potatoes looked like they’d been there all day. Other vegetables really hard, I think they were some sort of swede. After that we had desert, which for me was a lemon cheese cake, and it wasn’t up to much either, hardly any lemon cheese on it. I was really disappointed as we had gone specially for my husband’s 70th. Don’t feel like going back again.

Absolutely outstanding building, the features are amazing, love the mix of modern and historical, the food is rustic with a massive homely feel, portions sizes are incredible 😊 All the staff are welcoming, very polite and helpful. The period rooms are stunning the interior on a whole is a mix of Bridgeton’s / Downtown abbey. Room was comfortable with everything we needed and very clean 🤗 The beach is a less than a ten walk across the road the train station is also less than ten minute walk and the whole place is dog friendly.

We had our parents diamond Anniversary here on Saturday we all had a brilliant time the buffet was excellent. A special mention for Emily who was fantastic with the children taking them on a tour of the hotel and ghost hunt.

I feel compelled to share my experience at Moresby Hall, especially as I was influenced by the many glowing reviews before booking. While the property has undeniable charm and potential, my stay was not as seamless as I’d hoped. Firstly, the booking process could benefit from improvement. The hotel’s own website offered limited room descriptions and no clear photos of all the rooms, which made selecting the right room a challenge. I had to rely on third-party sites to get a better sense of what to expect, particularly as I was keen to avoid rooms on the top floor. Upon arrival, we found the signage unclear. The small entrance at the front and the lack of guidance around the rear of the building made parking and access a little confusing. That said, the presence of three EV charging points (including a Tesla charger) was appreciated, albeit at a somewhat steep £20 overnight fee. Check-in was warm and professional, which I really appreciated during what was a difficult personal time visiting a family member in hospital. We were kindly asked if we’d like to dine in the restaurant, though with last orders at 8pm, we decided against it. The building itself is full of character and history, which is a major plus, but the interior design felt inconsistent. While the restaurant and bar areas were tasteful and welcoming, the main reception and corridors seemed dated—possibly a result of mismatched furnishings and muted colour schemes. My room echoed this contrast. While I was told it had been recently refurbished, and the soft furnishings (curtains, throw, cushions) did feel of good quality, the carpet design gave an impression of being worn or unclean, and the overall decor lacked cohesion. The mattress, unfortunately, was in poor condition and sorely in need of replacement. I understand from staff that this was already on the list to be addressed, but it significantly affected my night’s rest. Heating was provided via a portable unit due to the building’s Grade I listing, which may prove insufficient during colder months—even in April, the room felt chilly. The bathroom featured a complex multi-jet shower system, which, while initially impressive, felt somewhat excessive and dated. A simpler and more modern alternative would likely serve better. Breakfast was mixed. The sausage and toast were excellent, but other elements were fairly average, and the bacon was unfortunately overcooked. However, the service throughout breakfast was polite and attentive. One surprising omission was the lack of complimentary bottled water in the room. Even a large reusable bottle of filtered tap water would be a thoughtful and inexpensive touch. In summary, Moresby Hall has enormous potential. It’s a unique and historically significant property with several strong points—friendly staff, beautiful grounds, and characterful spaces. However, attention to detail in decor, furniture, comfort (especially mattresses), and guest amenities would elevate the experience considerably. With a bit of investment and refinement, this could be a truly exceptional destination.

Had an evening meal today with my two friends. The food was excellent and great value for money. The two girls on duty were first class lovely welcome and pleasant, hope the management realises how nice they are. Would happily recommend this place to anyone and look forward to going back there.
