À propos de ce lieu Tennessee Williams House

Tennessee Williams — the openly gay playwright who gave American theater A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Glass Menagerie — bought this small 1933 frame cottage in 1950 and kept it until his death in 1983. Thirty-four years: the longest he ever owned a home anywhere, and the clearest statement of what Key West meant to him. Williams wrote each morning in a backyard studio he called "the Mad House," revising major plays and working through the era when The Rose Tattoo was filmed in Key West, partly in his orbit. The island gave him what mid-century America mostly refused a gay Southern writer: relative privacy, sun, and a town that let him be. He, in turn, helped seed Key West's reputation as a haven for gay writers and artists that persists to this day. The house itself is a classic 'Tom Thumb' cottage in the quiet White Street Gallery District — small, white, easy to walk past without a glance, which is rather the point. What you see today: a private residence with no public access and no tours — view briefly and respectfully from the street. For the full Williams story, the Key West Art & Historical Society's Tennessee Williams Museum (typewriter, first editions, a scale model of this very house) is relocating in 2026 from Truman Avenue to 604 Whitehead Street — check kwahs.org for current status before visiting. Combine both with a stroll to the Key West AIDS Memorial at the White Street Pier for the island's fuller queer-history arc.
