À propos de ce lieu Cooper Do-nuts / Nancy Valverde Square

In May 1959 — as the story is told — police ID-checking patrons at Cooper Do-nuts, a 24-hour downtown coffee stop popular with drag queens, hustlers and gender-nonconforming Angelenos, tried to arrest several customers. The cafe answered with a hail of donuts, coffee cups and trays until the officers retreated. If it happened as remembered, it was the earliest queer uprising in the United States, a decade before Stonewall. Honesty requires the caveat: the account rests almost entirely on novelist John Rechy, who said he was there and wove the milieu into City of Night. No police records or press coverage have surfaced, the cafe's exact address is disputed, and some historians question the event's scale. What is beyond dispute is the world it describes — under LA's cross-dressing ordinance, simply existing in public was an arrestable offense, and Cooper's was one of the few rooms that let everyone in. That is why the city's memorial honors two names. Nancy Valverde (1932-2024) was arrested again and again for 'masquerading' in men's clothes and fought the ordinance through the courts until enforcement collapsed. In June 2023 the LA City Council designated the intersection of 2nd and Main as Cooper Do-nuts / Nancy Valverde Square; at the sign unveiling, the LAPD formally apologized to the LGBTQ+ community. What you see today: a ceremonial street sign at a downtown corner — no cafe survives, and the square deliberately marks the memory rather than a verified address. A two-minute stop, best folded into a downtown walk, honoring both a story the community kept alive and a woman whose arrests were documented beyond any doubt.
