Evening in Lyon's 1st arrondissement: the fountain on Place des Terreaux lit up in front of the Hôtel de Ville, the smell of fried quenelles and red wine drifting out of a bouchon, skateboards clattering on the slabs by the Opéra, and the steep lanes of the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse climbing away behind. Tucked into these few streets between the Rhône and the Saône is almost all of the city's gay cruising. The scene is small and mostly indoors: one men's cruise club with a sex shop, a long-running sex club whose status is now unclear, and two saunas within a few minutes' walk. Outdoors, Parc de la Tête d'Or and the banks of the Rhône have a reputation, but French law and common sense both point you back indoors.
Legal in one line: France decriminalised sex between men in 1791 and opened marriage and adoption to same-sex couples in 2013; cruise clubs and gay saunas are legal private venues for adults (18+). Sex in public is not: under Article 222-32 of the Penal Code, sexual exhibition imposed on others in a place visible to the public carries up to one year in prison and a €15,000 fine.
How cruising works in Lyon
The gay bars, the cruise club and both saunas sit in a tight pocket of the 1st arrondissement, between the Opéra, Place des Terreaux and the Rhône quays; the nearest metro is Hôtel de Ville – Louis Pradel (lines A and C). You can walk between all of them in five minutes. The cruise club opens in the afternoon and stays open late, so there's no need to wait for midnight. Most men also use the apps, and plenty start with a drink at a bar nearby, such as Le Broc Bar or L Bar, both a couple of minutes from Le Trou. Neither is a cruise bar; the full list is in our Lyon guide.
Cruise club and sex shop
Le Trou
Le Trou, at 6 rue Romarin near Place des Terreaux, is a men's cruise club with a sex shop. Travel Gay describes a dark room, relaxing cabins, music and themed nights such as Jockstrap, Naked and BlackOut Night, and the shop sells toys, clothing, condoms and lube. Travel Gay lists it as open 14:00–02:00 on weekdays and 14:00–05:00 at weekends (phone +33 4 78 39 98 69). Entry has been reported at around €10, and an older review notes that no alcohol was served, only soft drinks. Reviews over the years are mixed, from praise for the staff to complaints about the smell and quiet nights, and the hours and theme nights change, so phone or check its social pages before you go.
Closed or uncertain: Le Premier Sous-Sol (Le 1er Sous-Sol), the sex club at 7 rue Puits-Gaillot between the Opéra and the Terreaux, has been one of the city's best-known cruising addresses: misterb&b dates it to 1994 and describes around 1,000 m² of dark mazes, video walls, cabins, glory holes and slings. Travel Gay still lists it as open daily from 14:00, but misterb&b now shows it as closed and a recent visitor review also says it has shut. We could not confirm it was operating in 2026, so check before you go. Lupercal (formerly BoxBoys), the cruise bar at 30 rue Burdeau on the Pentes, is marked closed by Travel Gay.
The saunas
Lyon's two gay saunas are both in the 1st arrondissement, a short walk from Le Trou. Details, prices and the latest reviews are in our Lyon saunas guide.
- DoubleSide, 8 rue Constantine, near the Terreaux: a men's sauna over two floors, described by misterb&b as a reference for gay saunas in Lyon and the region, with a hammam, dry sauna, jacuzzi, cabins and a bar. It is listed as open from noon every day and into the early hours on Friday and Saturday nights, though one January 2026 visitor found it closed early on a Monday. A visitor paid €22 in April 2026, with cheaper rates for younger men on some days. Reviews were still being posted in mid-2026.
- Oasis Club, 2 rue Coustou: a smaller sauna with a hammam, dry sauna, jacuzzi, cabins and a fetish room, which also runs trans and cross-dresser evenings. Hours change from day to day and include evening sessions on some nights, so phone first (+33 4 69 60 39 14).
- The law: Article 222-32 of the Penal Code punishes sexual exhibition imposed on others in a place visible to the public with up to a year in prison and a €15,000 fine. Parks, riverbanks and car parks count as public places. If someone who didn't want to see it calls the police, you are the one at risk.
- Parks close: Parc de la Tête d'Or is fenced and shuts at 22:30 in summer and 20:30 from mid-October to mid-April. Don't stay inside after closing time or climb fences.
- Robbery and attacks: isolated paths and spots under bridges are where thieves and homophobic attackers look for people who won't go to the police. Take only your phone, a card and a little cash, and tell a friend where you are going.
- Police: if the police stop you, stay calm, be polite and show ID. You can report a homophobic attack at any police station; it is an aggravating circumstance under French law.
- Emergency: call 112 (police: 17, ambulance: 15).
- Getting there: for Le Trou, DoubleSide and Oasis Club, use Hôtel de Ville – Louis Pradel (metro A and C); for Parc de la Tête d'Or, Masséna (metro A).
- Getting home: TCL's metro and trams stop running around midnight to half past on most nights, long before Le Trou closes. From Thursday to Saturday nights, TCL's four Pleine Lune night buses (PL1–PL4) leave Cordeliers, a short walk from the Terreaux, at 01:20, 02:30, 03:40 and 04:50. Check tcl.fr for any later metro running on your date. Taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Bolt cover the gaps.
- Entry and cash: expect around €10 at the cruise club and around €20 or more at the saunas, with youth rates on some days. Bring photo ID for any age discount, and some euros in cash.
- Lockers and phones: lock away your phone and wallet before you go into the dark areas. Never take photos inside; one 2026 sauna review reported a man filming in the changing room, so tell staff at once if you see it.
- Consent: "non" (no) is enough, in a darkroom as anywhere else, and you can always move away or leave.
- PEP: after a risk, go to a hospital emergency department (urgences) as soon as possible, ideally within four hours and no later than 48 hours (the window given by the French health portal sante.fr), and ask for TPE (traitement post-exposition). On weekdays, the CeGIDD sexual health centre at Hôpital Édouard-Herriot, 5 place d'Arsonval (3rd), provides free testing, PrEP follow-up and initial management of exposures; check current hours with the Hospices Civils de Lyon.
- Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose for someone else. Call 15 or 112 in an emergency.
- Bonsoir – good evening (say it at the door). Merci – thank you.
- C'est combien, l'entrée ? – how much is entry?
- La drague – cruising. Un lieu de drague – a cruising spot.
- Backroom – darkroom. Cabine – cabin. Casier – locker. Vestiaire – cloakroom.
- Capote or préservatif – condom.
- Non, merci – no, thanks. Arrête – stop.
- TPE – PEP. Dépistage – testing. Urgences – emergency department.
- Le dernier métro – the last metro. Un pot – a Lyon wine jug.
Outdoor spots
Two outdoor areas in Lyon have a long reputation among men looking for each other. We describe them at area level only. Both are busy public spaces used by families, joggers, cyclists and tourists, so treat them as places to meet, not places for sex.
Parc de la Tête d'Or
Lyon's great city park, in the 6th arrondissement on the left bank of the Rhône, with a lake, a free zoo, botanical gardens and greenhouses, and wooded paths around the edges. It is fenced and gated: the City of Lyon gives opening hours of 06:30–22:30 from mid-April to mid-October and 06:30–20:30 the rest of the year, with entry closing a quarter of an hour before, so don't plan on being inside after dark. The 2026 Pride march finished at one of its gates, the Porte des Enfants du Rhône. The nearest metro is Masséna (line A), about a ten-minute walk away.
Berges du Rhône
The long riverside promenade on the left bank of the Rhône, running south from the Tête d'Or past the moored barge bars, with lawns, steps down to the water, cycle paths and plenty of people out until late on summer nights. It's a place to stroll, sit by the water and get talking. The lighting and the crowds vary along its length, and the quieter stretches under the bridges are where the risks in the box below apply.
The law and your safety outdoors:
Lyon's legal alternatives are open every day: Le Trou from the afternoon until late, and the two saunas a few streets away.
A Lyon night, the local way
Lyon eats seriously, so eat first. A bouchon, the city's traditional bistro with checked tablecloths, serves quenelles (light pike dumplings) in sauce Nantua, a creamy crayfish sauce, saucisson brioché (sausage baked in brioche), tablier de sapeur (breaded tripe) and cervelle de canut, a fresh cheese whipped with herbs and shallots. Wine comes in a pot lyonnais, a thick-bottomed 46 cl bottle of Beaujolais or Côtes du Rhône. Walk it off through the traboules, the covered passageways that cut through buildings in Vieux-Lyon and on the Croix-Rousse slopes, and finish with a drink on a barge on the Rhône.
In early December, the Fête des Lumières fills the city with light installations over several nights around 8 December, when Lyonnais put candles (lumignons) on their windowsills. It brings huge crowds to the centre, including the streets around the Terreaux, so book accommodation early and expect transport changes. In 2026 it runs from 5 to 8 December, according to France's official tourism site; check the festival's own programme for the installations.
Practical tips
Lyon Pride 2026
Lyon had two Pride marches in 2026, after a split in the local movement. The Centre LGBTI+, which wanted a festive event, held a Bal des Fiertés at the Hôtel de Ville on 30 May and called a march for Saturday 11 July. The Collectif Fiertés en Lutte, which runs the more political march, planned its Marche des Fiertés for Saturday 27 June, but postponed it the day before because of the heatwave, after the authorities gave an unfavourable opinion. It finally took place on Saturday 10 October 2026, leaving from Gratte-Ciel in Villeurbanne (metro A) at 14:00 and walking about 3.8 km along cours Émile-Zola, Vitton and Franklin-Roosevelt and the Rhône to Parc de la Tête d'Or, where an associations' village was set up. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing; see our Lyon Pride page.

Frequently asked questions
Where is gay cruising in Lyon?
Mostly indoors, in the 1st arrondissement between the Opéra and Place des Terreaux. Le Trou on rue Romarin is a men's cruise club and sex shop, and the saunas DoubleSide and Oasis Club are a few streets away. Parc de la Tête d'Or and the banks of the Rhône have a reputation too, but sex in public is an offence in France.
Is Le Premier Sous-Sol in Lyon still open?
Probably not. Travel Gay still lists the club on rue Puits-Gaillot, but misterb&b and a recent visitor both report it closed, and we could not confirm it trading in 2026. Treat it as closed unless the club itself says otherwise.
Is outdoor cruising legal in France?
Sex between men is legal; sex where the public can see it is not. Article 222-32 of the Penal Code sets up to a year in prison and a €15,000 fine, and that covers parks and riverbanks. Parc de la Tête d'Or also locks its gates in the evening, and quiet spots under the bridges attract thieves.
Where can I get PEP in Lyon?
At any hour, at a hospital emergency department: ask for TPE, and don't wait, because it has to start within 48 hours. On weekdays the CeGIDD at Hôpital Édouard-Herriot (5 place d'Arsonval, 3rd) also deals with exposures, testing and PrEP.
When was Lyon Pride in 2026?
Lyon had two marches in 2026. The Centre LGBTI+ called a march for Saturday 11 July, and the Collectif Fiertés en Lutte march planned for 27 June was postponed because of a heatwave and held on Saturday 10 October, from Gratte-Ciel in Villeurbanne to Parc de la Tête d'Or.
