Pattaya at dusk: the sun drops into the Gulf of Thailand behind Koh Larn, a baht bus rattles down Beach Road with its ceiling buzzer pinging, and the smell of grilled pork skewers drifts out of the side streets. By ten o'clock the neon in the narrow lane of Boyztown is switched on, a drag queen is gluing on her lashes behind Castro's stage, and the waiters are bringing out ice for your Chang, because in Thailand beer comes with ice. A short ride south, under the covered walkway of the Jomtien Complex, the cabaret crowd is taking its seats. Pattaya's gay scene is big and busy, but it helps to know what kind it is: mostly go-go, cabaret and host bars, an audience that skews Western and older, and a night where money is part of almost every interaction. Go for the shows, the warmth and the cheap baht-bus rides; keep your wits, and your bill, in view.

Legal in one line: same-sex relations are legal in Thailand, and same-sex marriage has been legal since the Marriage Equality Act took effect on 23 January 2025, including joint adoption. Prostitution remains illegal under the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act of 1996, sexual contact with anyone under 18 in a commercial setting carries prison terms, and the legal drinking age is 20.

The three gay areas

• Boyztown: Pattayaland Soi 3, a short lane between Beach Road and Second Road in central-south Pattaya, a few minutes' walk north of Walking Street. The historic gay street, going back to the 1980s; quieter than its 1990s heyday and hit hard by the pandemic, but still home to the long-running go-go and show bars.
• Jomtien Complex (also called Supertown): a covered walking street of small bars, cabaret venues, massage shops and guesthouses near Dongtan Beach in Jomtien. Since the pandemic, misterb&b describes it as the busiest of the three.
• Sunee Plaza: off Soi VC near Second Road in South Pattaya. In 2010 it had dozens of gay venues; today it is down to a handful of host bars with an older international crowd.



Boyztown

Boyztown is mainly a show-and-go-go street. The go-go bars have young men dancing on a central stage, and staff will encourage you to buy them drinks. The show bars mix drag cabaret, dance numbers and, at Castro, a water-tank "swim show". You don't have to take part in anything beyond buying a drink and watching.

Boyztown's best-reviewed show bar on Google (4.4 from more than 150 reviews): nightly drag cabaret plus a swim show in a glass water tank. Travel Gay lists it as open daily from 16:00 to 02:00. Show times vary by source: listings say from 21:00 or 23:00, and reviewers describe a first show at around 22:45 and a second after 01:30, so check its Facebook page (Castrobarpattaya) on the day. Reviewers praise the friendly staff and polished shows and say it welcomes women; some find the drinks pricey and say solo guests can end up with poorer seats. Bring small notes to tip the performers.

Boyz Boyz Boyz · 325/87 Pattayaland Soi 3

A Boyztown veteran, described by Travel Gay as one of the first gay entertainment venues in Pattaya, with more than 20 years behind it. Go-go dancing starts at around 22:00 and a drag cabaret follows at around midnight; listed hours are 20:00 to 04:00. It gets crowded at weekends and over Songkran. Its handful of Google reviews are mostly negative, with complaints about drinks at 350 baht, pressure to buy drinks for dancers and a rude welcome at the door, so ask prices before you order.

X Boys · 325/37-38 Moo 10, Pattayaland Soi 1

A go-go bar with a black-and-chrome interior, a big central stage and nightly shows, plus themed nights; listed hours are 20:00 to 04:00. Its address appears as Pattayaland Soi 1 on Travel Gay and as Soi 13/3 elsewhere; it's just off the main Boyztown lane. Reviews are split between "great show" and "boring", and the recurring warning is about the bill: drink pressure, tips and one reviewer charged 500 baht more than expected. One reviewer paid 500 baht admission including a drink. Pay per round.



Panorama Pub · 244/10-11 Pattayaland Soi 3

The calmer option: an established pub with an air-conditioned lounge, a pool table and a terrace overlooking the Boyztown lane, good for people-watching before the shows. Travel Gay lists it as open daily from 18:00 to 02:00 with happy hour from 18:00 to 20:00. Reviewers like the attentive staff; some say prices are higher than in Jomtien and it can be quiet midweek.

Toy Boys · Boyztown

A small bar in the Boyztown lane with sporty, often shirtless staff. There are no published hours; reviewers have found the staff fairly passive and mention managers pushing guests to interact, and one quoted 280 baht for a beer. It's a host-style bar, so read the section on bar fines below before you sit down.

Jomtien

The Jomtien Complex is a covered strip with dozens of small bars, some of which close in low season and reopen under new names in high season. It's more relaxed and cheaper than Boyztown, and the cabaret shows are the highlight.

M2M Cabaret · Jomtien Complex

A cabaret show bar with drag and male-dancer numbers that change from night to night, including a pool or shower segment. Travel Gay lists it as open daily from 16:00 to 02:00 with the show at around 22:30 (GayOut's listing says 21:00, and one reviewer suggests arriving by 10:30 pm), and notes that it is a show bar, not a venue for "money boys". Reviewers call the prices fair and the tipping relaxed; one said entry was free.

Bamboo's Bar · 410/35 Thappraya Road, Jomtien

A small bar-restaurant on the main road rather than in the Complex, a few hundred metres from M2M. It fills up in the late afternoon with people coming off Dongtan Beach and draws a slightly older crowd. Reviewers mention friendly staff and fair prices (one paid 80 baht for a bottle of Chang); others find it quiet. Listed hours conflict (Travel Gay gives 09:00 to 02:00 but says it closes around midnight), so check its Facebook page.

Sunee Plaza and Hi Sis

Sunee Plaza, off Soi VC near Second Road, was once Pattaya's biggest cluster of gay bars; today it has a handful of host bars such as Diamond Boy Bar (273/37-38, listed by Travel Gay in June 2025 as closed on Saturdays) and Winner Boy. It's the rawest of the three areas. Police raids there in 2008, 2010 and 2013 found underage boys working as dancers, which is why the age warning below matters.

Hi Sis Club · 80/16 Moo 9, Phetchtrakul Road

Inland and away from the tourist strips, Hi Sis is a host club in the Thai and East Asian style rather than a Western gay bar: hosts wear numbers, a manager ("mama-san") helps guests choose company for the table, and there are DJs. Reviewers praise the hosts and the atmosphere, and some wished there were Chinese-speaking staff. One reviewer in March 2026 says they were charged 750 baht for fruit and ice they didn't order, on top of 950 baht for five beers. Ask what each item costs, and check the bill line by line.

Bar fines, the law and your safety

What a bar fine is: in many go-go and host bars, a customer can pay the bar a fee, often called a bar fine or "off" fee, so that a staff member can leave work early. Reviewers on GayOut mention these fees at several Pattaya bars. Paying the bar buys a staff member's time away from work; it does not buy consent to anything, and the person can say no at any point. You can too: you're never obliged to buy drinks for dancers or pay anyone's fee.

Under 18 means no, every time. Under the 1996 Prostitution Act, sexual contact with a child of 15 to 18 in this context carries one to three years in prison and fines up to 60,000 baht; under 15, two to six years and up to 120,000 baht. A dancer's or host's word, or the bar's, is not a defence. If someone looks young, don't engage: leave, and report it to the Tourist Police on 1155 or the police on 191.

The law: prostitution is still illegal in Thailand. Soliciting in public is fined, and owners of prostitution businesses face heavier penalties. A bill to decriminalise voluntary sex work was submitted to Parliament on 28 May 2026 by the Empower Foundation, and sex workers petitioned the prime minister to back it in August 2026, but it is not law. Police do raid bars; in February 2023 they raided an unlicensed gay bar off Pattaya Klang, charged the manager and drug-tested around 50 customers, 15 of whom were charged.

Money and theft: ask prices before ordering, pay per round, and check every line of the bill. Pattaya's press regularly reports tourists robbed in their hotel rooms by people they met a few hours earlier on the street, sometimes with violence. Keep cash and passports in the hotel safe, never leave a drink unattended, and don't take drinks from strangers. Drugs are dealt with harshly in Thailand: a raid can mean urine tests on everyone present.

A night out, the Pattaya way

Start late afternoon at Bamboo's after a day on Dongtan Beach, or with happy hour on Panorama's terrace. Eat something proper: a plate of som tam (green papaya salad) and grilled chicken, or a smoky moo kratha barbecue-hotpot. From 22:00, Boyztown's shows begin; catch Castro's first show, then the midnight drag at Boyz Boyz Boyz. Or ride a baht bus south to Jomtien for M2M's show and a slower bar crawl along the Complex. Finish the night as Thais do, with a bowl of khao tom (rice soup) from a late-night stall.

Practical tips

• Baht buses (songthaew): the pick-up trucks with two benches in the back run fixed one-way loops: south along Beach Road, north along Second Road, with routes out to Jomtien. Flag one down, hop in the back, press the ceiling buzzer to stop, and pay the driver through the window: 10 to 20 baht per hop, with small notes. If you tell the driver a destination before getting in, it becomes a private charter at a much higher price.
• Apps: Grab and Bolt both work in Pattaya; prices rise late at night and in heavy rain.
• Drinking hours: under rules reported to apply from 29 May 2026, shops and restaurants can sell alcohol from 11:00 to midnight with no afternoon break; licensed bars and clubs follow their own licensed hours. Expect alcohol bans on major Buddhist holidays and election days, and no drinking on most public beaches.
• Cash: carry 20s and 100s for tips, baht buses and bar bills. Tipping cabaret performers is part of the show.

• Health: condoms are sold at 7-Eleven. If a condom breaks, PEP needs to start within 72 hours; go to a hospital emergency room. SWING Pattaya works with male and trans service workers, and the Sisters Foundation supports the trans community.

Pride and big weekends

Pattaya International Pride Festival is held at the end of June and co-organised by Pattaya City with the Sisters Foundation and local LGBTQ+ businesses. The 2026 edition was scheduled for 26 to 28 June under the theme "Proud in Every Shade": a beach contest on the 26th, the parade along 2.8 km of Pattaya Beach Road on Saturday 27 June, and the Sisters Foundation's Health Queen pageant on the 28th. The weekend before, Circuit Festival Asia was listed at The Zign Hotel from 19 to 21 June 2026. For 2027, expect late June again, but wait for official dates. Over Songkran in mid-April, the bars and the Jomtien Complex throw multi-day street parties.
