Gay Bars & Clubs in Potts Point
Potts Point isn't Oxford Street, and it doesn't try to be. Darlinghurst, a few minutes' walk south-west, is Sydney's gay village — the strip of dedicated bars, clubs, and saunas around Taylor Square. Potts Point is the calmer, more residential neighbor: Art Deco apartment blocks, tree-lined streets, and one of the city's best eating strips. It has one genuinely LGBTQ+ venue of its own, and the whole Oxford Street scene is on its doorstep.
Grove Bar | Cocktail Lounge
Grove Bar (68 Darlinghurst Road) is Potts Point's only LGBTQ+ spot. It calls itself a rainbow and ally safe space, and it leans stylish, not sweaty — a cocktail lounge with drag, DJs, and a friendly, chatty crowd. It's a good place for a drink before dinner or a relaxed night close to your hotel, without heading into the Oxford Street crush.
The Real Scene Is Next Door in Darlinghurst
For dancing and the bigger gay clubs, walk five to ten minutes into Darlinghurst. Around Taylor Square you'll find the century-old Oxford Hotel (home to Ginger's cabaret bar), Universal superclub, ARQ, Palms on Oxford, the Colombian Hotel, and men's cruise venues like Bunker. Getting There
Potts Point is a 15 to 20 minute walk from the CBD through Hyde Park and along William Street, or two minutes by train to Kings Cross station (T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line). Buses run along Darlinghurst Road and William Street, and taxis and rideshares are easy to find. If you're drinking, use public transport or a rideshare home.
Practical Tips
You must be 18 or older to enter any bar or club in Australia — carry photo ID, as venues check strictly. Dress is smart-casual; Potts Point is a chic neighborhood. Sydney is safe, but take normal late-night precautions around Kings Cross: watch your drink and belongings, and plan how you'll get home.
