Gay Cruising in Recife: The Honest 2026 Guide

Late afternoon in Boa Vista: the light goes gold over the Capibaribe, the trade wind blows in warm off the Atlantic, the old bridges fill with buses heading home, and somewhere behind a plain door on a side street a receptionist is handing out towels and locker keys. Recife's cruising happens almost entirely indoors, in a handful of old-school men's saunas spread between the central districts of Boa Vista, Soledade and Santo Amaro and one near the beach in Boa Viagem. They are cheap and friendly, there are lots of garotos de programa (escorts), and they're nothing like the big sauna clubs of São Paulo. Here's what is open, what it costs and how to get home safely.

Legal in one line: Brazil has had marriage equality since 2013, and homophobia has been punishable as a crime since 2019, but sex in a public place is a separate offence: ato obsceno (Article 233 of the Penal Code) can bring a fine or three months to a year in prison. That's why this guide sends you indoors.

How the city is laid out

Gay Recife has two halves. Boa Vista and its neighbours Soledade and Santo Amaro, just across the river from the historic centre, are where the nightlife is: the club Metrópole, the bars around Rua das Ninfas and Avenida Manoel Borba, and three of the four saunas. Boa Viagem, the long beach district to the south, is where most visitors sleep, where Pride is held and where Blue Thermas sits. The two areas aren't within walking distance of each other, so you'll be using Uber or 99 a lot. Install both before you land.

The saunas

Termas Boa Vista · Rua Manoel Pereira 53

The busiest sauna in town and the one with the most recent reviews. Facilities include a dry sauna, steam room, video room, dark rooms upstairs, private cabins, lockers and a bar. The venue's own website gives these hours and prices: Monday to Thursday 15:00–23:00, R$55; Friday and Saturday 15:00 to 06:00, R$60, overnight, with a free breakfast between 05:00 and 05:30; Sunday 15:00–23:00, R$60, with a free hour of draft beer and soft drinks from 19:00 to 20:00. It says it opens 365 days a year and offers free Wi-Fi and parking, and your 11th entry is free after ten paid visits. (GayOut's listing shows different hours and slightly lower prices, so the website is the better guide; confirm on Instagram, @termasboavista.)

Visitors in 2026 mostly praise the cleanliness, the reception and the bar, and one regular mentions karaoke, raffles and bingo nights. The most common subject in reviews is the number of garotos de programa. Some guests like having them there, others feel there are too many and too few ordinary customers. Several reviewers say they're polite and take a "no" without fuss. Some reviewers also mention narrow corridors, loud music and the odd unfriendly member of staff. Address note: the venue's website gives Rua Manoel Pereira 53 in Santo Amaro, while some listings say Rua Dom Manoel Pereira, Boa Vista. Both point to number 53, on the edge between the two districts.

Recife Spa · Rua Corredor do Bispo 131, Soledade

The venue's website calls it a sauna masculina (men's sauna) and places it about 100 metres from Shopping Boa Vista. It's open daily from 14:00, with a dry sauna, a steam room and "many other spaces". misterb&b describes a restored mansion with private cabins, cruising areas, a bar, a terrace and karaoke and drag nights. It scores 4.4 from 56 Google reviews, with praise for the cosy atmosphere, cleanliness and security, though some find the music too loud. The website doesn't list prices. Ask on WhatsApp (the site gives two different numbers) or call (81) 3222-9008.

Blue Thermas · Rua José Domingues da Silva 147, Boa Viagem

The beach-side option, reported as open since 1999 and spread over several floors, with dry and steam saunas, a pool, a bar, a video room, lockers and paid and free rooms. Travel Gay lists it as Tuesday to Sunday 15:00–22:00, closed Mondays (last updated July 2025). Reviews from 2025–2026 are mixed. Recent visitors praise the hygiene and the facilities, but they also describe a mostly older crowd that can be thin on weekday afternoons, a cold reception and an unmarked door on a quiet street. One visitor paid R$50 in December 2025. One reviewer found it closed during listed hours in October 2024, and Travel Gay and GayOut give different phone numbers, so check Instagram (@bluethermasbvg) before you go.

Spa Thermas Sossego · Rua do Sossego 301, Santo Amaro

A small neighbourhood sauna, listed as open daily 15:00–23:00, with a dry sauna, steam room, bar and lockers (phone (81) 3132-9994). It's still getting reviews in 2026, but they're the weakest in town: some regulars like the friendly staff and low prices, while others say it's hot, dated and rough around the edges. Go with low expectations and very little cash.

Festa do Naldo · Rua da Conceição (listed)

GayOut lists Festa do Naldo as a small, word-of-mouth men's venue with a darkroom, a few minutes from Termas Boa Vista. A May 2026 reviewer mentions security, towels and lockers. Beyond four Google ratings, we couldn't find any independent source for its hours, prices or even what kind of venue it is. Treat it as unverified, and only go if a local you trust can confirm it's running.

Cinemas and darkrooms

Many Brazilian cities still have cinemões, old adult cinemas with a cruising crowd. We searched for Recife in Portuguese and English and found no source confirming an operating gay cinemão in 2025–2026, so we don't list one. In Recife, the darkrooms are inside the saunas, upstairs at Termas Boa Vista in particular. If a local tells you about a cinema, go by day and carry little cash.

Why there's no outdoor list

GayOut doesn't send you to beaches, parks or public toilets in Recife, on purpose. Sex in a public place is a crime in Brazil, and quiet streets and empty beaches at night are where visitors get robbed. Boa Viagem beach is a lovely place to spend a sunny afternoon over coconut water and a cold beer, and the city's own LGBTQIA+ guide points to friendly beach kiosks around Posto 7. Treat it as a place to sunbathe and socialise, not to cruise.

Safety: sharks, streets and rides home

• The shark signs on Boa Viagem are real. Boa Viagem has the most recorded shark incidents of any beach in Pernambuco (25 since records began in 1992), and 2026 has been the worst year in two decades. In June 2026 a 19-year-old was seriously injured by a tiger shark at Boa Viagem, a day after a boy was bitten at neighbouring Piedade. The state shark monitoring committee, CEMIT, tells bathers to respect the warning signs, flags and lifeguards, to stay in areas protected by the reefs, to take extra care at high tide, to avoid the open sea and currents, and never to go into murky water or near river mouths, or into the sea after drinking alcohol. The CEMIT shark monitoring committee says 55 of the 150 warning signs installed along the coast have been destroyed or removed, so a missing sign does not mean a safe stretch.
• Uber or 99, door to door, at night. The streets around the Boa Vista and Santo Amaro saunas empty out after dark, and reviewers mention feeling uneasy leaving on a Sunday evening and finding a deserted street outside Blue Thermas. Order the car from inside, wait indoors, and step out when it's at the door.
• Phone away on the street. Don't walk with it out at night, and lock it in your locker inside the sauna rather than leaving it in a cabin.
• Garotos and touts. Escorts are a normal, legal part of the sauna scene here. Agree terms before, not after, and a friendly "não, obrigado" is enough if you're not interested. One 2026 reviewer was approached outside a sauna by a man offering pricey "massages". Keep transactions inside the venue and clear.

Practical tips

• Paying: Pix, Brazil's instant payment system, is everywhere, but it needs a Brazilian bank account and CPF number. Carry a card and small notes in reais, and ask "aceita cartão?" at the door.
• Apps: Grindr and Hornet are both widely used in Brazil. Install both. Meet in a bar first, and be wary of anyone who rushes you somewhere else or asks you to send money.
• Before and after: the bars are a short ride from the saunas. Clube Metrópole (Rua das Ninfas 125, Boa Vista) has been running since 2002; in 2025 the Diario de Pernambuco called it the oldest LGBTQIAPN+ club still operating in the North-East. It has several bars and dance floors (Travel Gay counts seven bars and two floors), and the big nights are Friday and Saturday, from about 22:00 until dawn; check its social pages for the week's parties. • Health: Brazil's public health system, the SUS, offers free HIV testing, PrEP and PEP. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to a public UPA emergency unit or hospital and ask for PEP. • The Recife ritual: before the sauna, have a caldinho (a small cup of bean broth) and a beer so cold it frosts the glass at a boteco. Afterwards, take home a slice of bolo de rolo, Pernambuco's paper-thin rolled guava cake. At weekends the Mercado da Boa Vista fills with samba, forró and frevo, a few streets from the saunas.

Pride and events

The Parada da Diversidade de Pernambuco is held in September in Boa Viagem. The 25th edition was on Sunday 13 September 2026 at Parque Dona Lindu, starting at 08:00. As in 2025, it was a free stage event in the park rather than a parade of trios elétricos, because of works on Avenida Boa Viagem. The theme was "De pé, com o orgulho – Nossos corpos existem, nosso voto decide" ("Standing tall with pride: our bodies exist, our vote decides"). Termas Boa Vista's GayOut listing names Pride week and Carnaval as its peak periods.

Is there outdoor cruising in Recife?

GayOut does not list outdoor cruising spots in Recife. Sex in a public place is a crime in Brazil (ato obsceno, Article 233 of the Penal Code), and robbery of people who wander off to quiet streets, beaches or parks at night is a real risk. The saunas are cheap, central and open most of the day, so there is no reason to take the chance.

Is it safe to swim at Boa Viagem beach?
