The honest summary: Rennes has no gay hotels or gay-run guesthouses that we could find. What it has are ordinary hotels in a relaxed university city where a same-sex couple booking a double room is unremarkable. The useful choice is location: stay in or near the old town if you're going to Le Batchi, near the station if you're catching early trains to Saint-Malo or using Sauna California.

Old town and centre

Marnie & Mister H (3 rue du Chapitre) is a small guest house in the half-timbered streets by the cathedral. Google reviewers rate it 4.9 from about 130 reviews. Mama Shelter Rennes (Place de la Trinité) is the design-chain option, with a busy ground-floor bar-restaurant that gets loud at weekends. Hôtel Lanjuinais is a small, simple hotel by the Vilaine, close to République. From all three, Le Batchi on rue Vasselot is a short walk.

Budget, near the river and station

Les Chouettes Hostel (rue Dupont-des-Loges) is the best-rated budget option, at 4.7 on Google from about 400 reviews, and is between the old town and the station. Sauna California on rue de Léon is a few minutes away.

Outside the centre

Le Château d'Apigné at Le Rheu is a château hotel in parkland, best with a car. Hôtel L'Ortega in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande is handy for the airport and the exhibition centre. Kastellren is a small guest house on the southern edge of the city, and Liberty Hôtel Rennes Ouest is a budget stopover in a business park at Vezin-le-Coquet. These suit drivers more than anyone planning a night out.

When to book ahead

Rooms fill up around the Marche des Fiertés in June, the Trans Musicales music festival in early December, and big trade fairs at the Parc Expo. Outside those dates Rennes is easy to book at short notice.
