Gay sauna in San Salvador: the short version
If you searched for a sauna gay en San Salvador or a sauna gay en El Salvador, the honest answer for 2026 is that one place can be confirmed with recent visitor reviews: Sauna Scandinavia, also known as Club Scandinavia, a small men's sauna and hostel on 85 Avenida Norte in Colonia Escalón. It has a dry sauna, a steam room, a small pool, a hot tub and a bar. Google reviews from November 2025 and February 2026 describe it as clean, cosy and friendly. Older gay guides also list two other baños in the city, Spartakus and Baño Marroquí, but we could not find a 2025 or 2026 visitor report for either, so they are not on our verified list. Sex between men is legal in El Salvador, but there are almost no legal protections and the state of exception has run since 2022, so go discreetly, keep your ID on you and use app-booked rides.
The verified sauna
San Salvador is a city of about half a million people inside a metro area of more than two million, and its gay scene is small. Most of it is private parties, a few bars and the apps. The bathhouse scene comes down to one address that you can rely on, plus some older listings that may or may not still trade. We would rather tell you that than pad the list.
Sauna Scandinavia (Club Scandinavia), Colonia Escalón
Address: 85 Avenida Norte #330, Colonia Escalón, San Salvador. It sits in the west of the city, in the residential grid of Escalón, not in the historic centre. Older guides, including Spartacus, still give the club's previous address on 87 Avenida Norte #162, one street over. If a driver takes you there, ask for 85 Avenida Norte instead.
What it is: a men's sauna that also rents a few hostel rooms. The name on Google and Waze is "Sauna Scandinavia – Spa & Hostel". Facilities reported by visitors and guides: dry sauna, steam room, a small plunge pool, a hot tub, showers, lockers, a relaxation area, a bar with soft drinks and alcohol, and an outdoor garden or terrace. Gay guides also list a darkroom and private cabins. Free condoms have been reported. It has a 4.6 rating from about 150 Google reviews. A November 2025 reviewer mentioned "steam room, sauna, pool and hot tub", adding that the hot tub was not very warm. A February 2026 reviewer called it "a cosy sauna with friendly clientele and super nice staff".
Who goes: mostly local men of all ages, with some foreigners staying in the hostel rooms or in Escalón hotels. It is small, so the crowd depends heavily on the day. Weekend afternoons and early evenings are usually the busiest.
Hours: recent listings and the venue's own social posts point to afternoon-to-evening opening, roughly 14:00 or 14:30 until 21:00 to 22:00, mainly Thursday to Sunday. Waze shows Thursday to Saturday 14:00 to 22:00 and Sunday 14:00 to 21:00. Do not trust the Google "open now" label: an October 2024 reviewer rang the bell three times during listed hours and nobody answered. Before you go, message or call +503 6444 5956 (the number on Google and Waze), which also takes WhatsApp reservations.
Prices: the cover is around US$10 according to 2026 social posts, with drinks from about US$5. Older guide listings say US$10 on weekdays and US$12 at weekends. A recent promotion let 18-to-21-year-olds in free with a Salvadoran DUI, which tells you the door checks ID. Bring yours, or a passport copy plus the original. Prices are in US dollars, the national currency. Expect to pay cash. Some events have an underwear dress code, so check the post for that day before you go.
Practical rules: adults only (18+), men only. Ring the bell at the gate and wait to be let in. Use the locker for your phone and wallet. Staff say the place is "well maintained and very clean", and they expect you to keep it that way: shower before the wet areas, no photos, no outside alcohol. If you book a hostel room, it lets you rest between sessions and avoid a late-night trip across the city.
Other baños gay you may see listed (not verified)
Search for baños gay San Salvador and you will find two more names in international sauna guides and map apps. We are listing them so you know what they are, not as recommendations:
- Spartakus Sauna / Spartakus Men's Club, Avenida Sierra Nevada #702, Colonia Miramonte (one block from the García Flamenco school roundabout). Guides describe a renovated men's sauna with dry sauna, steam bath, hot tub, bar and darkroom, a US$12 entry and a free-entry promotion on Thursdays with minimum consumption. Its Facebook page and a few directory pages still exist, but we found no dated visitor review from 2025 or 2026, and the hours given by different directories contradict each other.
- Baño Marroquí, 1a Calle Poniente and 49 Avenida Sur #2526, Colonia Flor Blanca. Listed as a men-only "baño sauna" with wet sauna, small pool, bar, cinema room and private cabins. Older guides give a US$5 entry. Its website still loads, but the copyright line says 2020 and the site shows no current hours or events.
- Busiest: Saturday and Sunday from about 15:00 to 19:00, plus Friday after work.
- Quietest: weekday afternoons on the days it is open. One reviewer recommended weekdays if you want the steam room and hot tub to yourself.
- Pride: the San Salvador Pride march usually takes place in late June. The sauna and bars sometimes run themed nights around it. Dates not announced yet for 2027.
- Holidays: during Semana Santa and the August festivals (fiestas agostinas), hours can change at short notice. Ask on WhatsApp.
- Use app rides. Uber and similar apps work across the metro area and leave a record of the trip. If you take a taxi, have your hotel call one for you rather than hailing on the street.
- Do not walk long distances after dark, even in Escalón. Streets empty quickly in the evening and pavements are patchy.
- From the airport: El Salvador International (SAL) is roughly 45 minutes from Escalón by road. Use an official airport taxi or a pre-booked transfer.
- Checkpoints: under the state of exception, police and soldiers sometimes stop cars and pedestrians. Carry your passport or a clear copy plus the entry stamp, stay calm and answer briefly.
- Sex between men is legal and has been since 1822. The age of consent is the same for everyone.
- No marriage or civil unions. The constitution and the Family Code limit marriage to a man and a woman, the Constitutional Chamber threw out challenges in 2016 and 2019, and same-sex couples cannot adopt. President Bukele has said he will never legalise same-sex marriage. Claims you may read that El Salvador legalised civil unions are wrong.
- Thin protections. Since 2015, sexual orientation and gender identity have been aggravating factors under the hate-crime law, with penalties of three to six years. A 2010 decree bans discrimination only in the public sector. Private employment, housing and services, including hotels and businesses, are not covered.
- Trans people cannot legally change their gender. A 2022 court ruling ordered a name-change route that the Legislative Assembly has never implemented.
- The direction is backwards. In February 2024 the Education Ministry removed gender perspective from school curricula. The Ministry for Social Inclusion was dissolved, and inclusive language was banned in public institutions in 2025.
- The state of exception, in force since March 2022 and renewed dozens of times, suspends some due-process guarantees. Human rights groups have documented mass arbitrary arrests. A 2024 report by Salvadoran NGOs counted at least 104 LGBTIQ+ people detained under the regime, and the trans rights group ASPIDH recorded 922 attacks on LGBTI people between 2023 and 2025, including illegal detentions and extortion.
- Free HIV testing: HIV tests are free and confidential at Ministry of Health (MINSAL) health units and national hospitals.
- Clínicas VICITS: MINSAL's sentinel STI clinics serve key populations, including men who have sex with men and trans women, with HIV and STI testing, treatment and counselling at no cost. San Salvador has a VICITS clinic in San Jacinto (Barrios health unit), where PrEP delivery was being monitored in 2025.
- PrEP: since MINSAL's 2024 technical guidelines, PrEP has been available free through the VICITS network after a negative HIV test. Read the MINSAL PrEP guidelines (PDF). Visitors on a short trip should bring their own supply from home, because enrolment is aimed at residents.
- PEP: after a possible exposure, go to a hospital emergency department within 72 hours, ideally within 24. Private hospitals in Escalón and San Benito are quickest for foreigners with travel insurance.
- Community support: COMCAVIS TRANS, ASPIDH Arcoiris Trans and the Federación Salvadoreña LGBTI can point you to friendly services. Asociación Entre Amigos has done HIV prevention with gay men for decades.
- Arrive and leave discreetly. Have the ride drop you at the door, ring, and go straight in. Order the ride home from inside.
- Carry little. Take one card, enough cash for the cover and drinks, and your ID. Leave other valuables at the hotel and lock your phone away.
- Consent is clear and simple. A hand moved away or a step back means no. Respect it the first time. Staff will remove anyone who harasses others.
- No photos or video anywhere inside. Outing someone in El Salvador can cost them their job or their family.
- Drinks: watch your glass and do not accept open drinks from strangers.
- Drugs: El Salvador has very harsh drug laws, and the state of exception gives police wide powers. Do not bring anything.
- If something goes wrong, contact your embassy first. Human rights groups say police cooperation on anti-LGBT incidents is poor, and many local victims are afraid to report.
If you visit either one and find it open, or closed for good, please tell us (see the end of this page). We will verify it and add it to the list.
When to go
San Salvador's saunas run in the daytime. They open in the early afternoon and close by about 22:00 at the latest, so a sauna visit here is an afternoon or after-work plan, not a late-night one. That suits the city: you arrive and leave in daylight or early evening, when roads are busier and rides are easy to find.
Getting there and around
Escalón is one of the safer, wealthier parts of San Salvador, and it is where most visitors stay. Hotels such as Hotel Villa Florencia Zona Rosa, the Sheraton Presidente, the Hotel Real Intercontinental and the Hilton San Salvador are a short ride from the sauna, and so is the Zona Rosa bar strip. Budget options include Hostal Cumbres de El Salvador and Hostal Genoveva.
Apps
Grindr is the main way gay and bi men meet in San Salvador, and many locals use it to check who is at the sauna before going. Keep it low-key: use a profile photo that does not show your face in public settings, meet first in a public place or at the sauna rather than a private address, and never send money or ID documents to someone you have not met. LGBTI organisations in El Salvador have documented extortion cases, and fake profiles that set people up for robbery are a known risk across Central America. If a conversation turns to threats or money, block the person and save the screenshots.
The law in El Salvador
Here are the facts, without the optimism you sometimes see in travel copy:
In practice, a foreign visitor going to a private sauna in Escalón is very unlikely to have problems. But no law protects you if a hotel, a driver or a police officer treats you badly, and the risk of arbitrary detention is real for local men, especially in poorer areas. Stay discreet in the street, keep public displays of affection to safe spaces, and always carry ID.
Health: HIV testing and PrEP
At the sauna itself, use the condoms provided or bring your own, and drink water. Steam rooms and alcohol in the tropical heat can dehydrate you quickly.
Safety and etiquette
Before and after: bars and nearby alternatives
Since the sauna closes early, many men go on to a bar afterwards. In San Salvador, try Living SV, Scape or Secret House SV, all a short ride from Escalón. Check their socials for opening nights, because many only open Thursday to Saturday. For the full picture of the city, see our gay San Salvador guide, and for outdoor spots across the region use the gay cruising map.
No other confirmed gay sauna operates in El Salvador outside the capital. If you are travelling through the region, Guatemala City is the nearest larger capital with its own gay scene.

Keep this page honest
Last checked: November 2026. Hours, prices and even addresses change here without notice, and small saunas in Central America open and close quietly. If you have been to Sauna Scandinavia recently, or you find Spartakus or Baño Marroquí open or shut for good, use the report or edit button on the venue page or contact us through the site. Tell us the date of your visit, the price you paid and the hours posted at the door. We check every report before publishing, and we never publish names or photos of anyone you meet.
