Late on a Friday in Kreis 4, the trams still squeal round the corner at Langstrasse, kebab smoke drifts out of the takeaways and the bars spill people onto the pavement under the railway bridge. A few streets away the Limmat runs fast and green past the Old Town, and the church clocks keep striking the quarter hours as if nobody were up. Zurich is rich, orderly and relaxed about being gay, but its cruising scene has shrunk. In 2026 we found no permanent darkroom bar or men's sex club in the city: the last ones closed between 2018 and 2024. What remains is a set of saunas, one of them open until 04:00 at weekends, a few ticketed fetish parties and, as everywhere, the apps.
Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal across Switzerland since 1942, same-sex couples have been able to marry since 1 July 2022, and saunas and private fetish parties are legal venues for adults. Sex in public is a different matter: see the box on the law and safety below.
How cruising works in Zurich now
Zurich used to have a small circuit of men's bars with back rooms, a fetish club on the edge of town and a sex cinema on Langstrasse. All of those have gone (see the closed box below). Today the cruising happens in three places: the saunas, especially Renos Relax in Kreis 4; the fetish and kink parties that hire a club for a night; and Grindr and the other apps, which most men use to fix a date at home or at a hotel. Zurich's districts are numbered (Kreis): Kreis 1 is the Old Town, and the late-night streets are in Kreis 4 and 5, around Langstrasse and the old industrial quarter.
The saunas: where most of the cruising is
Zurich has four men's saunas, and all of them have the cabins and quiet corners you would expect. Full details, hours and reported prices are in our Zurich saunas guide; here is the short version.
Renos Relax · Brauerstrasse 16, 8004 Zürich (Kreis 4)
The nearest thing Zurich has to a cruise club. Its website describes a gay section and a mixed section, play zones, cabins with bondage fixtures, a mirror cabin and BDSM rooms, plus a bar and a smoking lounge. It runs occasional "Dark & Naked" Thursdays (18:00–00:00) and a weekend night sauna from 23:00. Official hours are Monday to Wednesday and Sunday 12:00–22:00, Thursday to midnight, and Friday and Saturday 12:00–04:00. Listings say Tuesdays and Fridays are bi days, when women, couples and bi men are also welcome. Visitors reported paying CHF 42 in 2023 and CHF 50 in January 2026. The sauna moved here from Kernstrasse 57, apparently in 2024, so ignore old listings with that address.
The daytime saunas
- Paragonya, Mühlegasse 11 (Kreis 1): a large two-floor sauna in the Old Town with a whirlpool and cabins, open from 11:30; sources disagree on the closing time (19:00 to 23:00). Several reviews mention being approached by rent boys.
- Apollo, Seilergraben 41 (Kreis 1): small, renovated, with a cabin area downstairs and a mostly older crowd; listed daily 12:00–20:00.
- Sauna Mylord, Seebahnstrasse 139 (Kreis 3, Wiedikon): small and discreet, for gay, bi and married men, daytime hours only.
- Männerzone bar (Kernstrasse 57, Kreis 4), the bears' and leathermen's weekend cruise bar in the shop's garage, closed on 17 December 2022 when the building was sold. The shop lives on at Hohlstrasse 48, without the bar.
- Sauna Moustache (Engelstrasse, Kreis 4) closed in January 2024, according to Travel Gay.
- Rage (Wagistrasse 13, Schlieren), the cruise and fetish club with a maze, slings and the dress-code floor "Sector C", had closed by June 2020, when gay.ch described Play! as its successor.
- Kino Roland (Langstrasse 111), the sex cinema, closed in 2022 and is being turned into a techno club.
- Magnusbar (Magnusstrasse 29), a cruise bar with a darkroom, closed in 2018.
- Sexual harassment (Art. 198 StGB): under Article 198 of the Swiss Criminal Code, anyone who performs a sexual act in front of someone who does not expect it, and thereby causes offence, can be fined (Busse). It is prosecuted on complaint, so it only takes one passer-by who objects.
- Exhibitionism (Art. 194 StGB): since the reform of Swiss sexual criminal law on 1 July 2024, an exhibitionist act is punished with a fine, and a serious case with a monetary penalty (Geldstrafe); it is also prosecuted on complaint. A Zurich appeal court applied this article in June 2025.
- Robbery: Zurich is a safe city, but quiet paths and strangers' flats are where thieves look for people who won't go to the police. Carry only your phone, one card and a little cash.
- App dates: meet first in a bar, tell a friend where you're going and share your location.
- Police: if the city police approach you, stay calm and polite and show your ID. Carry it with you.
- Emergency: call 117 for the police, 144 for an ambulance, or 112.
- Entry and prices: everything is in Swiss francs (CHF) and nothing is cheap: budget around CHF 40–50 for Renos and CHF 30–40 for the daytime saunas, going by recent visitor reports. Party tickets are usually sold online in advance.
- Paying: cards are widely accepted, and many Swiss pay with the TWINT app; carry a little cash for smaller venues.
- Dress codes: the saunas have none, but Play! and similar parties enforce theirs at the door. "Jeans and a T-shirt" won't get you in.
- Lockers and phones: lock your locker and keep the key on your wrist. No photos inside, ever; Play! bans phones and photos.
- Consent: "Nein, danke" (no, thanks) is enough, in any room, at any time.
- PrEP: Checkpoint Zürich, at Konradstrasse 1 near the main station, offers HIV and STI testing, PrEP and PEP; phone +41 44 455 59 10. Its hours (listed in 2021 as afternoons and evenings on most weekdays, Sunday afternoon, closed on Saturday) may have changed, so check before you go.
- PEP: Swiss guidelines updated in November 2025 say to take the first dose as soon as possible, ideally within 4 hours; the benefit drops sharply after 24 hours and PEP is no longer recommended after 48 hours. Outside Checkpoint's hours, go to a hospital emergency department (Notfall), such as the Universitätsspital Zürich (USZ).
- Getting home: on weeknights, check your last tram or bus before you settle in. On Friday and Saturday nights the ZVV runs night S-Bahn trains and night buses across the city and canton, and since 2021 there has been no night supplement: a normal ticket is enough. Check connections in the ZVV or SBB app.
- Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose for someone else. Call 144 in an emergency.
- Grüezi – hello. Merci – thanks, as the Swiss say it.
- Was kostet der Eintritt? – how much is entry?
- Schliessfach – locker. Handtuch – towel.
- Darkroom, Kabine (cabin), Dresscode – the same as in English.
- Kondom – condom. Gleitmittel – lube.
- Nein, danke – no, thanks. Always enough.
- Notfall – emergency (department).
- Nachtnetz – the weekend night network of trains and buses.
- Proscht! – cheers, Swiss-German style.
Fetish and kink parties
Play! · usually at Komplex Klub, Hohlstrasse 457, 8048 Zürich
Play! started in June 2020, when gay.ch presented it as a new gay fetish series filling the gap left by the closure of the Rage club; the first edition, at Sektor 11 in Oerlikon, cost CHF 30 in presale. Recent editions have been held at Komplex Klub in Altstetten. Travel Gay describes play zones and dark zones, techno, a big dance floor, a garden and a bar, with fetish wear compulsory (leather, rubber, sports or military gear) and no phones, photos or smoking. Editions are irregular, so watch the organisers' Instagram and the gay.ch party calendar.
The next one we found was play#hrdr, a joint night with #hrdr from Basel, on Saturday 21 November 2026, 22:00 to 06:00, with a kinky dress code (leather, rubber, sportswear or naked) and extensive darkroom space. Unlike the classic men-only Play!, this edition welcomes all sexual identities. A Freiburg events site listed regular tickets at 35 euros; check the price in francs when you buy.
Shops and cinemas
MZ Shop (Männerzone) · Hohlstrasse 48, 8004 Zürich (entrance in the courtyard)
For about two decades the Männerzone was a leather and fetish shop with a bar on Kernstrasse, the regular haunt of the Leathermen of Switzerland, the Swiss Rubbermen and Gear Point. When the building was sold, it closed in December 2022 and reopened in January 2023 as a smaller shop, the MZ Shop, across the street at Hohlstrasse 48, according to gay.ch. In 2023 it opened on Tuesdays and Fridays from midday to the evening and on Saturdays from midday to the afternoon. gay.ch described no bar or darkroom at the new address, so treat it as a shop for gear and advice, not a cruising venue, and check the hours before you go.
Porn cinemas
Langstrasse's Kino Roland, at number 111, opened in 1913 and became a sex cinema in the 1970s. It closed in 2022, and in November 2023 FAZEmag reported that the operator of Club Zukunft would lease it from 2025 and turn it into a techno club under the same name. We could not confirm any gay adult cinema operating in Zurich in 2026.
Where to start the night
None of Zurich's gay bars are cruise bars, but they are where the evening begins. Travel Gay calls Cranberry the city's most popular gay cocktail bar. For the full list of bars and clubs, see the gay Zurich guide.
Closed:
Outdoors and in public
Like every city, Zurich has parks, lakeside paths and stations that old guides still associate with men looking for each other. We don't send you to any of them: they are busy public spaces, and the city has legal, private alternatives open every day of the week. If you do go out, know the law and the risks below.
The law and your safety:
A Zurich night, the local way
Zurich starts early and finishes late. Begin with a Feierabend beer as the offices empty, then a heavy supper: Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, sliced veal in cream sauce, with crisp Rösti. In autumn and winter, the street stands sell roasted chestnuts (Marroni), and a cheese fondue is the city's answer to a cold evening. Later, cross into Kreis 4 for the bars around Langstrasse, and if you're still up after midnight, a Bratwurst from a stand with a hunk of bread and mustard is the classic way to end the night.
Practical tips
Zurich Pride 2026
Zurich Pride usually means a march and a two-day festival on the Landiwiese by the lake in June. In 2026 there was no festival: in February the Zurich Pride association's members voted to cancel it, citing debts carried over from earlier years and a loss of about CHF 150,000 on the 2025 edition, according to swissinfo. The demonstration went ahead on Saturday 20 June 2026 under the motto "Zugang schafft Zukunft" ("access creates a future"). Several tens of thousands of people marched, for the first time along Bahnhofstrasse, to the Landiwiese, reported the Südostschweiz. Plans for 2027 had not been announced when we checked. In May, the queer cultural festival Warmer Mai fills the city's calendar.
A few words of German
Zurich speaks Swiss German (Züritüütsch) day to day, but everyone understands standard German, and most staff speak English.

Frequently asked questions
Where is gay cruising in Zurich?
Mostly in the saunas and at ticketed fetish parties. Renos Relax on Brauerstrasse in Kreis 4, with its BDSM rooms, cabins and weekend night sauna, is the closest thing to a cruise club, and Paragonya, Apollo and Mylord are daytime saunas. Beyond that, men meet on the apps and at parties such as Play! at Komplex Klub.
Are there darkroom bars or sex clubs in Zurich in 2026?
Not as permanent men's venues, as far as we could find. The Männerzone bar on Kernstrasse closed in December 2022, the Rage club in Schlieren had closed by 2020, and Magnusbar closed in 2018. Darkrooms now come with the saunas and with occasional parties, so check the party calendars before your trip.
Is outdoor cruising legal in Switzerland?
Being gay anywhere is legal, but sex in public can be prosecuted. Under Article 198 of the Swiss Criminal Code, performing a sexual act in front of someone who does not expect it and is offended is punishable by a fine, and Article 194 covers exhibitionism; both are prosecuted on complaint. The saunas are the legal, safer option.
Where can I get PEP in Zurich?
During opening hours, at Checkpoint Zürich, the health centre for gay and bi men at Konradstrasse 1 near the main station. At night or on Saturdays, go to a hospital emergency department such as the Universitätsspital Zürich (USZ). Swiss guidelines say to start within hours, ideally within 4 hours, and not after 48 hours.
When was Zurich Pride 2026?
The demonstration took place on Saturday 20 June 2026, along Bahnhofstrasse for the first time and on to the Landiwiese. There was no two-day festival in 2026, because the Zurich Pride association cancelled it over debts and a loss on the 2025 edition. Plans for 2027 had not been announced when we checked.
