The honest summary: Seoul has the biggest gay scene in East Asia that most visitors only see a corner of. There are three distinct worlds: Itaewon, where the clubs and the foreign crowd are; Jongno 3-ga, where dozens of tiny Korean bars fill the alleys around Nakwon Arcade; and a string of discreet men-only saunas spread across the city. Hongdae is where the bars for queer women are. The law leaves you alone, but society is conservative and most gay Koreans are not out, so the whole scene runs on discretion. Nobody will bother you; the deal is that you extend the same privacy to everyone you meet.

Legal in one line

Sex between men and between women is legal for civilians in South Korea, with an equal age of consent of 16, but there is no marriage, no civil union and no national anti-discrimination law. Soldiers are the exception: Article 92-6 of the Military Criminal Act still punishes same-sex acts between service members. The Supreme Court ruled in April 2022 that it does not cover consensual sex off base and off duty, but in May 2025 it reversed an acquittal for acts on base, so the article still applies inside the barracks. In July 2024 the Supreme Court ordered the National Health Insurance Service to give So Seong-uk's partner dependent status, the first court win for a same-sex couple, though it did not recognise the partnership itself. Legal gender change goes through the courts, and most judges still expect surgery.

Itaewon: Homo Hill and the club blocks

Itaewon, in Yongsan-gu, is the international side of the scene. Take Line 6 to Itaewon station. The famous strip is Homo Hill, the steep lane of Usadan-ro 12-gil that starts just behind the Hamilton Hotel. On it are long-runners like Why Not (K-pop videos and singalongs, closed Mondays), Eat Me (a small cocktail bar), Eagle Seoul (the leather and cruising club at number 13), MICHIN (a bear bar in the room the old Queen club used) and Miracle, the hill's lesbian bar, opposite Eagle.

The weekend has moved downhill. Since 2024 a wave of new clubs has opened around the main road and the Itaewon fire station: PUBLIC at 192 Itaewon-ro with drag and showgirl performances, PING and Ground in the same building at 195 Itaewon-ro (PING is the K-pop after-club that runs until about 09:00), dopamin at 189 Itaewon-ro, GYM in a basement at 36 Usadan-ro for rave and Bear Ball nights, KOOKIE at 46 Usadan-ro and the men-only The Red at 43 Usadan-ro. Queen, Seoul's oldest gay club, left Homo Hill in 2025 and reopened in a basement at 124 Bogwang-ro, next door to the late-night bear club Bear Cave. Round the corner on Bogwang-ro 59-gil, RUSH is a lounge club with no cover and 2F, one floor below it, has drag shows at 23:00 and 01:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Itaewon is a weekend place. Thursday evenings can be close to empty; Friday and Saturday after midnight the lanes are packed. Most clubs open at 23:00 and close between 05:00 and 07:00. VAYL (vayl.studio), a Korean LGBTQ+ venue archive, is the best place to check what is open on a given night.

Up the hill from Itaewon, Haebangchon (HBC) has a mixed queer and expat scene: Rabbithole Arcade Pub has arcade games and drag most weekends, and Uplift Seoul is a small bar with a drag stage on Noksapyeong-daero.

Jongno 3-ga: the Korean scene

Jongno 3-ga, in the old centre on Lines 1, 3 and 5, is where Korean gay life has been since the late 1970s. Sources count around 75 small bars in the alleys around Nakwon Arcade, most of them upstairs rooms seating ten or twenty, run by a host who talks to everyone at the counter. The crowd is Korean and mostly over thirty, and many bars are Korean-speaking only. Staff sometimes ask, politely, whether you know what kind of bar this is. Answer warmly and you are usually in.

Good first stops for visitors: Friends (open since 2004, behind Nakwon Arcade, used to foreigners), Shortbus (English-speaking staff), the Samchang Building at 26 Donhwamun-ro 11-gil (SHUTTER on the second floor, GLOVE on the third, Mbar on the fifth and DZBZ with its rooftop on the sixth and seventh), and Red Face on Supyo-ro, a karaoke bar with a drag show on Saturdays. Y Seoul, behind 59 Donhwamun-ro, is the K-pop club with no cover and a drag show every Saturday around 01:30. Bar Jungle and the queer-friendly Ounce are on the quieter Ikseon-dong side. Before the bars, do what the locals do and sit down at one of the orange-tented pojangmacha street stalls by the station.

Many small Jongno bars run on a bottle-and-snack (anju) order or a table charge rather than single drinks. Ask before you sit down if you are unsure.

Hongdae, Gangnam and Sillim

Hongdae and the Mapo district are where Seoul's bars for queer women cluster. Travel Gay's 2026 list names The Concept, a lesbian pub at 31-10 Wausan-ro 21-gil, among others, but several women-only clubs share their addresses only by direct message. In Gangnam, Loba is a gay-owned whisky bar (formerly JR Bar) at 522 Gangnam-daero. Sillim, in the southwest on Line 2, has a small younger local cluster of its own, including the bear bar KAMUI.

Saunas

Seoul's gay saunas are called jjimbang (찜방), one syllable away from jjimjilbang (찜질방), the family bathhouses. The difference matters: anything sexual in an ordinary jjimjilbang or neighbourhood bathhouse is public indecency, a criminal offence, and police raided a men's sauna in Geumcheon in February 2026. Use only the dedicated venues. In Itaewon, He's (formerly Hyundae) at 10 Bogwang-ro 60-gil is open 24 hours, with VAYL listing ₩15,000 by day and ₩20,000 at night in March 2026. South of the river near Nonhyeon station, Shelter and Oban are on parallel lanes about 100 m apart, Cuba (formerly Black) is on the fourth floor of 6 Bongeunsa-ro 1-gil, and Equus is a cruise club with theme nights on Gangnam-daero. Prince, near Sinchon station, is a dry cruise venue that is closed on Tuesdays and often turns foreigners away. Adam near Sinseol-dong is a neighbourhood-style bathhouse with an older local crowd. Our saunas guide covers prices, door rules and etiquette in detail.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

Queen did not close; it moved from Homo Hill to 124 Bogwang-ro in 2025. Its old room is now MICHIN. Mun Hwa, the Jongno sauna many guides still list, was reported closed in mid-2025. GM Sauna near Dongdaemun was marked permanently closed in 2025. Tool in Jongno (formerly HERO Bar) shows as permanently closed on Google. Always Homme, Soho, Barcode, Club Qubic and Pink Hole are closed. Kockiri, Itaewon's queer electronic bar, closed at the end of 2024; it reopened for a time but announced in September 2026 that it was ending its current way of operating. FEVER in Itaewon has been on hiatus since 28 September 2026. Trance, the old drag bar on Homo Hill, still posts on Instagram but is missing from the Korean listings, so check before you go.

Pride and events

The Seoul Queer Culture Festival (서울퀴어문화축제) has run since 2000, when about 50 people met in Daehangno. The 27th edition was on Saturday 13 June 2026, with a stage and about 70 booths on Namdaemun-ro near Euljiro 1-ga station from 11:00 and a parade at 16:00 from Jonggak station past Myeongdong Cathedral and Seoul Plaza, about 3 km. The city has refused the festival use of Seoul Plaza since 2023, so it now fills the streets around Euljiro, and a Protestant counter-rally is held nearby every year. Organisers have claimed up to 150,000 participants in some years (2019, 2024); police rarely publish a figure. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing; expect a Saturday in June.

The Korea Queer Film Festival (KQFF) is part of the festival month, with screenings in late June (26-28 June in 2026). The separate Seoul International Pride Film Festival (SIPFF) runs in early November at CGV Piccadilly 1958 in Jongno; the 15th edition was 6-12 November 2025. The Seoul Drag Parade, founded in 2018 by Hurricane Kimchi and Ali Vera, marches through Haebangchon and Itaewon on the 3 October public holiday; the 8th parade on 3 October 2025 started from Rabbithole Arcade Pub. Trans groups hold a remembrance gathering around 20 November each year.

Community

Chingusai (친구사이), Korea's gay men's rights group since 1994, has its office at 39-1 Donhwamun-ro in Jongno and runs counselling and the G-Voice chorus. DDing Dong supports LGBTQ young people and keeps its address private; contact it through ddingdong.kr.

Practical tips

Getting in: Incheon (ICN) is the international airport, about 60 km west by road; the AREX express reaches Seoul Station in about 43 minutes. Gimpo (GMP) mostly handles domestic flights and short hops to Japan, China and Taiwan.

Maps: Google Maps walking directions are weak in Korea. Use Naver Map or KakaoMap, both with English menus, and save exact addresses; few gay bars have signs.

Getting home: the subway stops around midnight. After that take an "N" night bus or a Kakao T taxi, or stay over in a 24-hour sauna as many locals do.

Money: bring cash in ₩10,000 notes; some venues add VAT for card payments.

Apps and privacy: Jack'd and Grindr are the apps most cited in Korea, and local men often move the chat to KakaoTalk. Don't photograph people in bars, never use a phone camera in a sauna, and don't tag anyone online.

Drugs: Korean drug law is harsh, with prison terms even for small amounts, and it applies to foreigners.

Halloween: on 29 October 2022 a crowd crush in the alley beside the Hamilton Hotel killed 159 people. Itaewon's Halloween weekends now come with police crowd control; expect closed lanes and one-way routes.

A few words of Korean

Iban (이반): gay, community slang, a pun on ilban (일반), "ordinary people". Jjimbang (찜방): gay sauna. Oegugin (외국인): foreigner, the word you'll hear at the door. Geonbae (건배): cheers. Gamsahamnida (감사합니다): thank you. Eolmayeyo? (얼마예요?): how much is it?

At a glance

Main gay areas: Itaewon/Homo Hill (Line 6, international crowd, clubs) and Jongno 3-ga (Lines 1, 3, 5, Korean bars). Queer women: Hongdae and Mapo, plus Miracle on Homo Hill. Busiest nights: Friday and Saturday after midnight. Saunas: He's (Itaewon), Shelter, Oban, Cuba (Gangnam/Seocho), Prince (Sinchon). Pride: Seoul Queer Culture Festival, a Saturday in June. Airport: Incheon (ICN), 43 minutes by AREX express.

FAQ

Is Seoul safe for gay travellers? Yes, in the everyday sense: violent crime against tourists is rare and the gay areas are not policed. The risk is social, not legal. Public affection between men draws stares outside Itaewon, and many Koreans you meet are closeted, so be discreet with photos and names.

Where are the gay bars in Seoul? Itaewon (Homo Hill on Usadan-ro 12-gil and the clubs around Itaewon-ro and Bogwang-ro) for the international scene, and Jongno 3-ga for dozens of small Korean bars.

When is Seoul Pride? The Seoul Queer Culture Festival is held on a Saturday in June. The 27th edition was on 13 June 2026 around Euljiro; the 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.

Is Queen in Itaewon closed? No. Queen moved off Homo Hill in 2025 and reopened at B1, 124 Bogwang-ro, open Friday to Sunday from 23:00.

Can foreigners visit Seoul's gay saunas? Usually. He's and Shelter regularly admit foreigners, often at a flat rate of about ₩20,000. Prince and Cuba often turn foreigners away, so have a second option.

Last verified: October 2026.

Domande frequenti
