Gay Nagpur: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: Nagpur is a big, hot, central-Indian city of about 2.4 million people (2011 census), and it has no gay bar, no gay club, no gay sauna and no regular queer party night that we could confirm in October 2026. We searched in English, Hindi and Marathi and checked the international gay guides, and none of them name a single venue here. What Nagpur does have is a community: Sarathi Trust, which has run the Orange City LGBT Pride March since 2016, and a Pride Carnival at the VR Nagpur mall whose third edition in June 2026 drew more than 300 LGBTQIA+ participants. Most queer life here happens on apps, in private circles and at those few public events. If you want a gay night out, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad are a short flight away.

Legal in one line: Consensual sex between adults of the same sex has been legal in India since the Supreme Court read down Section 377 on 6 September 2018 (Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India), and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, in force since 1 July 2024, has no equivalent offence. Same-sex marriage isn't recognised (Supreme Court, 17 October 2023). Trans people have legal recognition under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019, and Maharashtra set up its Transgender Welfare Board in February 2019.

Bars and clubs

There's no bar or club in Nagpur that calls itself gay or LGBTQ+. General guides list Nagpur's usual nightlife, such as the lounges along Wardha Road and the bars of Dharampeth and Ramdaspeth, but none of them say any of these places has queer nights, and we found no evidence of one either. A misterb&b page calls Dharampeth "the best gay area"; that's generic copy, and there's no gay district in Nagpur.

We also found no queer party brand that runs regular nights here, unlike Pune, Mumbai or Hyderabad. Instagram isn't well indexed, so a private, invite-only party could exist, and the people to ask are the Sarathi Trust team or the people you meet through the apps.

Saunas and cruising

There's no gay sauna or cruising club in Nagpur. Massage parlours advertising "male to male" services aren't gay saunas, and we don't list them. We also don't list outdoor cruising areas anywhere in India. The dating-app robberies described in the safety section show how risky isolated meet-ups can be.

Community: Sarathi Trust

Sarathi Trust is the city's LGBTQ+ anchor. It works with gay and bisexual men, trans people and hijra communities on HIV and STI prevention and treatment links, counselling, legal aid and help with gender-identity documents. Its leaders have lobbied the district administration for trans toilets and hospital wards. Directory listings put it at the YMCA premises near Lata Mangeshkar Hospital in Sitabuldi, though one gives a Kamptee Road address, so phone before you turn up. It's the best first contact if you need a doctor, legal help or simply want to know what's on.

Pride and events

The Orange City LGBT Pride March, organised by Sarathi Trust, first walked on 5 March 2016. About 400 people set off from Samvidhan Square (Constitution Square) and went past Zero Mile, Variety Square and Ramdaspeth. After that it settled into a Saturday in January or February: 18 February 2017, 13 January 2018, 16 February 2019 (the first after the 2018 ruling) and 18 January 2020. It paused during the pandemic, then returned on 7 January 2023 and 6 January 2024. The 2024 march was co-organised with the Delhi-based Keshav Suri Foundation and drew people from Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh as well as Maharashtra. We found no march in January 2025 or January 2026.

Pride & Events

Pride Month now has its own fixture. The VR Nagpur mall at Medical Square held its third Pride Carnival on 27 June 2026 with Sarathi Trust and the Mumbai-based Humsafar Trust. According to the mall, there was a Pride parade, performances, a community fashion show and live music, with 300+ LGBTQIA+ participants and more than 800 attendees in all. Wikipedia also lists a Nagpur LGBT Queer Carnival run by the events company Orange Tales each June since 2018, but we found nothing on it after 2023, so treat it as dormant.

No 2027 date for either event had been announced when we checked in October 2026. Watch Sarathi Trust's channels from December for a winter march and VR Nagpur's events page in May and June.

Where to stay

Central Nagpur is Sitabuldi, the old market district with the metro interchange, and the residential districts west of it, Ramdaspeth, Dharampeth and Civil Lines, which have the better cafés and restaurants. Tuli Imperial, Hotel Centre Point and Ginger City Centre are all in Ramdaspeth, and Hotel Hardeo is in Sitabuldi, a short walk from Samvidhan Square. Wardha Road runs south from the centre to the airport and has the big chain hotels: Radisson Blu, Pride Premier (an Indian hotel chain, nothing to do with Pride) and, further out near MIHAN, Le Méridien. None of these hotels markets itself to LGBTQ+ guests.

Getting there and around

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (NAG) is about 8 km south-west of the centre. IndiGo, Air India and others fly to Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and other Indian cities. Qatar Airways' Doha flights were suspended in March 2026 and resumed in May, so check before you book anything international. Nagpur Junction is one of the main rail crossroads of India. The Nagpur Metro's two lines, Orange (north-south) and Aqua (east-west), cover about 38 km and meet at Sitabuldi, and a feeder bus links the airport to the Airport metro station. For night trips, use Uber, Ola or Rapido rather than flagging down a stranger.

Nagpur is very hot before the monsoon: the average May high is about 43 °C and peaks reach 45–48 °C. The monsoon runs from June to September. The cooler months from November to February are the easiest time to visit, and that's also when the Pride march has usually been held.

What else is on

Nagpur calls itself the Orange City and the Tiger Capital. Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is roughly 140 km away and Pench about 70–120 km depending on the gate. In the city, Deekshabhoomi is where B. R. Ambedkar and several hundred thousand followers converted to Buddhism in 1956, and the Zero Mile Stone is said to mark the geographic centre of British India. Nagpur is also where the RSS was founded in 1925, and its headquarters is here, which adds to the city's socially conservative reputation.

Safety

The law no longer criminalises you, but Nagpur is socially conservative and there's no visible gay space, so most local queer people are discreet. The specific risk is dating-app crime. In June 2026 Mankapur Police arrested five men who used the gay app "Polo" to lure an 18-year-old delivery worker to Mankapur Chowk at midnight and rob him (Nagpur Today). In October 2026 Wathoda Police arrested two men who robbed a 27-year-old of about ₹35,000 after a dating-app meeting near Bahadura (eSakal). In June 2025 a bank manager in Akola, elsewhere in Vidarbha, was blackmailed after a gay-app meeting (Aaj Tak). Meet new contacts in a mall or café first, don't go to isolated spots on the outskirts at night, leave cards and spare cash at the hotel, and call 112 if something goes wrong. Sarathi Trust can help with police contact.

Alcohol rules are strict on paper: 21 for beer and wine and 25 for spirits under Maharashtra's excise rules, with a liquor permit technically required, though one-day permits are sold at bars. The state also has eight fixed dry days a year, including 26 January, 1 May, 15 August and 2 October.

A few words

Samalaingik (समलैंगिक): gay or homosexual, the same word in Marathi and Hindi, though most people just say "gay". Tritiyapanthi (तृतीयपंथी): transgender, the Marathi official term. Kinnar (किन्नर): transgender in Hindi. Chakka (छक्का): a slur, good to recognise. Namaskar: hello. Dhanyavaad: thank you. Madat kara!: help! (Marathi).
