The honest summary: Antwerp is Belgium's second city (about 573,000 people in September 2026) and a port, fashion and diamond town an hour or less from Brussels and Ghent by train. It has never had a real gay village. Researchers who have studied the city describe venues that clustered, shifted and dissolved over the decades. What it does have is a handful of good queer bars spread over three walkable pockets, Belgium's biggest regional Pride every August, the Darklands fetish week in late winter, one gay sauna and a well-run community house. It's a scene of regulars more than tourists, and that's the appeal.
Legal in one line: homosexuality has been legal in Belgium since 1795; same-sex marriage arrived on 1 June 2003 (the second country in the world after the Netherlands), joint adoption in 2006, and since 1 January 2018 legal gender change is based on self-determination, without medical requirements. Anti-discrimination law has covered sexual orientation since 2003.
Where the scene is
The historic centre. Around the Grote Markt, the Melkmarkt and the Theaterplein you'll find the daytime-into-evening bars: Café DeLux on the Melkmarkt by the cathedral, Café Twilight on Nieuwstad off the Theaterplein, and Cut, a women-led queer bar on Grote Pieter Potstraat. This is the easiest place to start.
The Schipperskwartier and Falconrui. North of the old town, towards the MAS museum and the Eilandje docks, the old sailors' and red-light quarter has the late venues: Café Hessenhuis in the 16th-century Hessenhuis warehouse, the Red & Blue party at Cargo Club, the Mister B fetish shop on Falconplein and, a little further north, The Boots and Club Random.
Zurenborg. Two kilometres south-east of the centre, among the Art Nouveau houses, Draakplaats is home to Het Roze Huis, the city's LGBTQ+ community house, and its café Den Draak. Tram 11 runs close by.
Older guides still send people to Van Schoonhovenstraat, next to Antwerpen-Centraal. In its heyday it was nicknamed the "Rue de Vaseline" for its kinky cafés and darkrooms, and Café Strange nearby was the city's oldest gay café. Today it's history, not a destination. Linx+ runs queer history walks from the station to the Hessenhuis if you want the story.
Gay bars and clubs
Café Hessenhuis, Falconrui 79. Patroc describes it as a bar and meeting place for the LGBTQ+ community since 1993. DJs and dancing at weekends, drag and Eurovision nights; evenings Wednesday to Sunday, until 4am on Friday and Saturday.
Café Twilight, Nieuwstad 4. Gay café-bar with a big terrace; Wednesday to Sunday from the afternoon.
Café DeLux, Melkmarkt 18. A brown café with two terraces that Patroc's 2026 list includes among the gay bars; mixed crowd, drag from time to time, open daily from 11am.
Cut, Grote Pieter Potstraat 21. A queer bar run as a safe space led by women, with DJs and small gigs; closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Café Den Draak, Draakplaats 1. The community-house café: relaxed, mixed, with a terrace on the square. Closed Mondays.
Red & Blue at Cargo Club, Lange Schipperskapelstraat 11-13. Red & Blue is the long-running gay party brand; Cargo opens on Saturdays from 23:00 until morning (about 15 euros) and also hosts other queer nights such as WoodPop. Check cargoclub.be for which Saturday is which.
Bonaparte, Grote Markt 21. A mainstream karaoke bar, not a gay bar, but it has hosted drag bingo and the Pannekoek tea dance during Pride week.
Antwerp's cruising is indoors. The Boots on Van Aerdtstraat is a men-only fetish and SM club with darkrooms and themed dress-code nights; membership is sold at the door and you need ID. Club Random on Geulincxstraat is a dance club with a cruising labyrinth upstairs, open Friday and Saturday from 23:00 until 8am and Sunday evenings, and it hosts the men-only Kinky's Antwerp afternoons. Sauna 't Herenhuis in Berchem, open since 1999, is the city's only gay sauna: daily from noon, 22 euros (18 under 30, 15 under 25). Our cruising guide has the details. We don't list outdoor spots: sex anywhere the public can see you can be prosecuted as exhibitionism under Belgium's 2022 sexual-offences law.
Mister B (Falconplein 14) sells leather, rubber and gear and is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Toys 4 Boys (Nosestraat 6) is a small leather and fetish shop known for made-to-measure work, open Thursday to Sunday.
Antwerp Pride runs for five days in early August. The first edition was in 2008. The 2026 edition, themed "Fearless", ran from 5 to 9 August; the parade left the Scheldt quays at 14:00 on Saturday 8 August and passed Sint-Jansvliet and the Kloosterstraat on its way south to 't Zuid, where the free Love United festival filled the quays. Organisers told VRT about 170,000 people came to the parade. The 2027 edition is the 20th; it will be in the first half of August, but the dates weren't fixed in October 2026. See our Antwerp Pride page.
Beyond Darklands, the fetish festival formerly called Darklands, takes over Antwerp in late winter, with a fetish market, demos and parties at the Waagnatie (Rijnkaai 150) and satellite nights at The Boots, Club Random and Mister B. The 2027 edition is announced for 16 to 22 February. See Beyond Darklands.
The Antwerp Queer Arts Festival, run by volunteer artists and curators, fills the summer before Pride with exhibitions and performances; the 2026 edition ran from 19 June to 16 August. In 2013 Antwerp also hosted the World Outgames alongside Pride; EuroPride that year was in Marseille, not Antwerp.
Community and health
Het Roze Huis (Draakplaats 1) is the umbrella for about thirty groups: Antwerp Pride, Active Company (sport, including swimming and water polo), WIJDAMES for women over 30, T-Buddy trans peer support, Aut&Out, ChemMEN chemsex support and the Rainbow Ambassadors for older LGBTQ+ people. Reception is open Monday to Thursday, 12:00 to 16:00. For testing, the Helpcentrum of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Kronenburgstraat 43) gives free HIV tests and paid STI tests on weekday afternoons by appointment (03 247 66 66).
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Café Strange (Dambruggestraat) opened in 1954 and closed on 30 October 2021. The MAS museum bought some of its memorabilia.
The Kinky's, the private cruise club near the station, closed in October 2021; the name lives on as a party at Club Random.
Man Playz, the sex shop on Sint-Jacobsmarkt, appears to have closed: its website is gone and it no longer shows on maps.
Kartonnen Dozen, the queer bookshop, closed in 2022.
"Sint-Andries" and "Sint-Jansvliet" are not gay districts, whatever some websites say, and we found no trace of bars called Taboo or Sloepke. Red & Blue is a party, not a separate club.
Practical tips
Getting there: fly into Brussels Airport (BRU); direct trains reach Antwerpen-Centraal in about 30 to 35 minutes. Antwerp's own airport (ANR) has only a few holiday flights. Brussels is about 35 to 50 minutes by train, Ghent under an hour.
Getting around: the centre is walkable; De Lijn trams (some in the "premetro" tunnels) and the Velo shared bikes cover the rest. The whole city is a low-emission zone, so foreign drivers must register their car online first.
When to go: early August for Pride, late February 2027 for Darklands, or any weekend for the bars. Many venues close on Monday and Tuesday.
Safety: Antwerp is safe and openly LGBTQ+ friendly, but the federal police registered 78 anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes in Antwerp in 2024, the second-highest count in Belgium after Brussels, and nearly half the suspects were minors. Usual big-city care late at night applies; report incidents to the police or to Unia.
A few words
Holebi is the Flemish umbrella word for lesbian, gay and bi. Roze means pink, Fierheid pride. Een bolleke is a glass of De Koninck, the city's beer. Schol! is cheers, and merci is as common as dank u.
