The honest summary: Agia Marina is a beach resort of about 1,700 people on Crete's north coast, roughly 9 km west of Chania. It has a long sandy beach, a coast road of hotels, tavernas and cocktail bars, and no gay venues at all. What queer nightlife this corner of Crete has happens 15 minutes away in Chania's old town: a summer party night called Apollo Party, plus a couple of gay-friendly bars. Come for the beach and the sunsets behind Thodorou islet, stay somewhere quiet, and take the bus into Chania for a night out.
Legal in one line: Greece decriminalised sex between men in 1951, introduced civil partnerships in 2015 and opened civil marriage and joint adoption to same-sex couples in February 2024, the first Orthodox-majority country to do so.
Which Agia Marina?
There are several places called Agia Marina in Greece, including on Aegina and Leros. This page covers Agia Marina in the municipality of Chania, north-west Crete: 1,679 residents at the 2021 census, and many times that in July and August. The resort runs together with Stalos to the east and Platanias to the west along one coast road, so the boundaries are fuzzy. Hotels here often list their address as Chania.
The scene: what's here and what isn't
Nothing in Agia Marina calls itself gay. The bars along the beach and the old national road are mixed, mainstream beach bars and cocktail bars, and in high season they fill up with young people from Chania and package-holiday visitors. You may find Oki Bar described online as a gay venue. Its own website describes a beachside sports café and cocktail bar, and we found nothing linking it to the LGBTQ+ scene. The same goes for Chania Beach Party, a mainstream electronic music festival held at a beach club in Agia Marina in August.
For anything queer, go to Chania. Even there, don't expect a gay street. As of October 2026, the city's options are:
Apollo Party: a ticketed queer club night that started in summer 2024 and bills itself as Chania and Crete's first and only gay bar and club night. It runs on Thursdays and Saturdays in summer at an old-town venue; the 2026 dates listed on its website included 29 August and 3 and 5 September. Tickets are sold online only, with no door sales, and the venue is on your ticket. Dates go up on Instagram (apollo_party_crete).
Ababa, at Isodion 12 in the old town: a café-bar and small art gallery that Travel Gay lists as gay-friendly but "not explicitly a gay bar". Coffee and board games by day, cocktails at night, open 10:00 to 03:00.
Klik Bar, at Sourmeli 2: a dance bar that Travel Gay and other guides list as gay-friendly, with a mostly mixed tourist crowd and late hours. We couldn't confirm it is still trading in 2026, so check its Instagram first.
There are no gay saunas anywhere on Crete; the nearest are in Athens. The closest bar that calls itself gay is Y.O.L.O. in Hersonissos, more than two and a half hours' drive east (see our Heraklion bars page). For most visitors, Grindr is how the scene connects here.
Where to stay
None of Agia Marina's hotels markets itself to LGBTQ+ guests, and we haven't found any that holds an LGBTQ+ certification, so we don't call any of them gay hotels. What you can choose is the type of crowd. Adults-only places are quieter than the big family resorts:
Thalassa Beach Resort & Spa: adults-only, on the main street a few minutes from the beach, with a spa and indoor pool.
If you plan to go out in Chania more than once, staying in Chania's old town saves a late taxi each night. Agia Marina is the better pick for a beach holiday with the odd night out.
Agia Marina's own beach is long, sandy and organised, with sunbeds, showers and water sports, and sheltered by Thodorou (Agioi Theodoroi) islet just offshore. The islet has been a nature reserve since 1930 and is a refuge for the kri-kri, Crete's wild goat; it's closed to visitors.
No beach in Chania prefecture is a designated gay beach. Two sources, the Cretan beach guide cretanbeaches.com and a travel blog, describe Machairida (Μαχαιρίδα), a small, fairly isolated cove on the Akrotiri peninsula about 14 km north-east of Chania, as popular with gay and nudist visitors. Further west, the far end of Falassarna, Kedrodasos and the far end of Sougia beach are known for tolerated nudism, but they're mixed, not gay. Nudism isn't formally legal in Greece, so keep a low profile and cover up if families are near. Sex in public is an offence anywhere in the country.
Pride
Agia Marina has no Pride. Chania held its first self-organised LGBTQI+ visibility march (Πορεία Ορατότητας) at the end of June 2023. It set off from the Koum Kapi waterfront and ended with a queer party on the beach by the former Xenia hotel, despite a counter-protest called by far-right groups. We could not confirm a dated march in Chania in 2024, 2025 or 2026, so watch local LGBTQ+ social media in late spring. Crete's established Pride is Heraklion's self-organised festival, held from 3 to 5 July in 2026; Heraklion is about 140 km east of Chania.
Safety and attitudes
Greek law is now among the most equal in the region, and the resorts are used to visitors of every kind. Crete is more traditional than Athens, though, and the 2023 counter-protest in Chania shows that attitudes vary. Use the same common sense as anywhere: relaxed on the beach strip and in Chania's old town, more low-key in inland villages and on quiet streets late at night. If something goes wrong, the emergency number is 112.
Practical tips
Getting there: Chania airport (CHQ) is on the Akrotiri peninsula, about 26 km from Agia Marina, around half an hour by taxi. Ferries from Piraeus dock at Souda, east of Chania.
Getting around: KTEL buses run along the coast road between Chania and Agia Marina every 20 to 30 minutes in summer, for a couple of euros. They stop running before the parties end, so plan on a taxi back.
Season: Agia Marina is a summer resort. Most hotels open from about April to October and many close in winter. Apollo Party only runs in summer.
Going out: Greeks eat late and go out later. Bars in Chania fill up after 23:00, and Thursday to Saturday are the big nights.
Check before you go: small, seasonal venues on Crete open, move and close often. A look at the venue's Instagram saves a wasted taxi fare.
A few words of Greek
Yia sou (Γεια σου): hi, bye
Efcharistó (Ευχαριστώ): thank you
Yia mas! (Γεια μας): cheers!
Tsikoudiá (τσικουδιά): Crete's grape spirit, often served free after dinner
Paralía (παραλία): beach
