Gay Genoa: The Honest 2026 Guide
Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change
They call it La Superba, "the proud one", and Genoa has earned it. It's a salty old port city stacked up a mountainside: sailors and gilded Renaissance palaces, the UNESCO-listed Palazzi dei Rolli, and below them a dark, medieval maze of narrow alleys, the caruggi, where washing hangs between the walls and the sea glints at the end of every lane. Genoa's great singer-poet Fabrizio De André gave those alleys their soul: in songs like Via del Campo and Princesa he sang with tenderness about the sex workers, trans women and outsiders of the old town, long before most of Italy would. That spirit of quiet tolerance still runs through the city. Genoa doesn't try to charm you, and that's exactly why it does. The gay scene is like the city: low-key, a little hidden, and best enjoyed with a local guide. There's one long-running Saturday-night disco, a sauna in the old town, a cruise bar out west in Sampierdarena, a handful of queer-friendly bars in the caruggi, and one big week in June when Liguria Pride fills the streets. Here's how to find it all.
Legal in one line: Italy has had same-sex civil unions since 2016, though not full marriage or joint adoption, and there's no national hate-crime law covering sexual orientation. Genoa itself is liberal and relaxed, and two men holding hands in the centre won't raise eyebrows.
The card you'll need: as everywhere in Italy, the sauna and the cruise bar are private clubs. You'll be asked for a national membership card, ANDDOS or ARCO depending on the venue, which you can buy at the door with ID. It's valid for a year at every member club in that network across Italy, so keep it if you're travelling on to Milan, Turin, Florence or Rome.
Where the evening starts
- Aperitivo in the caruggi: do as the Genoese do and start with an Aperol spritz or a Negroni in Piazza delle Erbe or nearby Piazza Sarzano, the liveliest squares of the old town after dark, packed with students and a relaxed, mixed crowd.
- Giardini Luzzati: a small open-air square in the heart of the old town, run by a social cooperative, with a bar open many hours a day and a programme of music, talks and community events. It's one of the most open, liberal spots in the centre, the hub of the Pride Village every June, and a lovely place for a drink under the sky on any warm evening.
- Disegual La Notte: Genoa's big summer LGBTQ+ night, held on Fridays in season at the waterfront venue La Rosa dei Venti in the old port, with DJs and drag. Check Arcigay Genova's site for this year's dates.
- Arcigay evenings: Arcigay Genova has run a regular Tuesday aperitivo night at its base on Via del Lagaccio for members (you can join on the spot), from autumn to early summer. Ask the association what's on.
- Banano Tsunami, Ponte Embriaco, Porto Antico: not a gay bar, but a relaxed, gay-friendly bar and club on the old harbour with sea views, cocktails and focaccia; a good place for an early drink.
- Hotel Palazzo Grillo, Piazza delle Vigne 4: a frescoed 16th-century palace in the heart of the caruggi, with design rooms and a lovely bar; the most characterful stay in town.
- Marathon Hostel Beds & Beer, Via degli Archi 1r: a friendly budget option in the centre, with its own beer bar.
- See all gay-friendly hotels in Genoa. Staying in or near the historic centre puts you walking distance from Loska, the sauna and the port; Virgo and Lux Club are a short taxi or train ride west.
- Pieve Ligure: big smooth boulders and clear water for snorkelling, about 250 metres from Pieve Ligure station, a short regional-train ride east from Genova Brignole. From the station you step over the guardrail and climb down to the sea.
- Punta Chiappa: a rocky point inside the Portofino marine reserve, with turquoise water. Take the train to Camogli, then walk about two kilometres from San Rocco di Camogli, or take the seasonal boat from Camogli.
- The caruggi at night: the old town is atmospheric and lively until late, but some alleys, particularly around Via Prè and the lower port lanes, can be rough after midnight. Stick to busy streets and keep your phone out of sight.
- Getting around: the centre is walkable (and very hilly). For Sampierdarena, take a train from Principe or Brignole, or a taxi at night.
- Apps: Grindr and Romeo are both used; Genoa's grid is small but active, especially in summer.

Nightlife
Virgo Discoclub · Via Alfredo Carzino 13r, Sampierdarena
Genoa's gay disco, running since 2001 under a string of names (Boomerang, Bulli e Pupe, Coccodrillo, Ovest) and still the city's main gay night out. It's a Saturday-night party, mostly in the winter season, over two levels: a dance floor with the DJ booth and a lounge with sofas below, a balcony above, and go-go dancers on busy nights. It's in Sampierdarena, a working-class port district west of the centre, which is also home to Lux Club. It isn't an area for wandering on foot late at night, so take a taxi there and back (call a radio taxi or book through Radio Taxi Genova on 010 5966 or the itTaxi app (FreeNow does not cover Genoa)).

Loska · Via di Sant'Agnese 25r, historic centre
The friendliest queer bar in the caruggi: a small, alternative cocktail bar with DJ sets, board games, food (vegetarian options included) and fair prices, described by regulars as "a safe space for queer people". Order the house drink, the Loska. Open in the evening until late.
Summer and community nights

Sauna and cruising
Aqua Club · Salita Salvatore Viale 15r, near Piazza De Ferrari
Genoa's only gay sauna, a long-running men's club tucked into a stepped lane just off the city's main square. Inside: a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi, showers, lockers, a video room, private cabins, a maze and a darkroom. It opens from 15:00, is closed on Tuesdays, and closing times vary between listings (from 20:00 to midnight), so check before you go. Weekdays are quieter, with a mature, bear-friendly crowd, and reduced weekday prices have been offered. Entry is roughly €10–15 plus the membership card. Online reviews are mixed, so manage your expectations.

Lux Club · Via Sampierdarena 112r, Sampierdarena
The city's men-only cruise bar (formerly Lussurian), over two floors: a bar, video rooms, a labyrinth, darkrooms, glory holes and private rooms. It has opened on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights from 22:00 to about 03:00–04:00, with a naked night on Sundays; Friday and Saturday have a casual dress code. A membership card is required. Check its Facebook page (luxclubgenova) for this week's nights.
Outdoor cruising: the old walls at the Mura delle Cappuccine have a night-time reputation, but local LGBTQ+ guides call them unsafe and public sex can bring heavy fines in Italy. Stick to the sauna and the cruise bar.
Liguria Pride and community
Liguria Pride is held in Genoa every June. In 2026 the parade took place on Saturday 13 June, gathering at 15:00 in Via San Benedetto, near Principe station, and marching from 16:00 along Via Balbi, Piazza Corvetto and Via XX Settembre to Piazza De Ferrari, where the party carried on into the Pride Village between De Ferrari and the Giardini Luzzati, with concerts, shows and family activities.
Arcigay Genova, at Via del Lagaccio 92R, is the city's LGBTQ+ association and a Pride organiser. It runs a trans* help desk and a legal and migrants' desk (both on Tuesdays), an anti-discrimination centre, and information on where to get an HIV test in Genoa. Phone +39 351 227 5029. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to a hospital emergency department (pronto soccorso).

Where to stay
Eat and see
Genoa is a food city first. Start the day like a Genoese: a square of warm, salty, olive-oil-glistening fugassa (focaccia) straight from the bakery, dunked into your cappuccino (it sounds wrong; it isn't). Then eat farinata (chickpea pancake) from a wood oven, and trofie al pesto, made with the basil that made this region famous. GayOut's favourites include Settepolpette and Voltalacarta. Between meals, ride a funicular or the Castelletto lift for views over the rooftops, walk the palaces of Via Garibaldi, and take the bus to Boccadasse, a pastel fishing village inside the city, for a spritz at sunset.

Summer: the Ligurian rocks
Genoa is the gateway to the whole Ligurian Riviera, and on summer weekends the city empties towards the sea. Two naturist spots are an easy trip from the centre, both on rocks rather than sand, with a mixed, relaxed and open-minded crowd:
Closer in, locals swim off the rocks at Quarto and Nervi on the city's eastern seafront.
Safety and practical tips
Genoese words worth knowing: belin!, the famous all-purpose Genoese exclamation (wow, damn, seriously?), best used once you know someone; caruggi, the narrow alleys of the old town; mugugno, the Genoese art of complaining about everything, which locals consider a constitutional right; and fugassa, focaccia in dialect.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a gay scene in Genoa?
Yes, but it's small and spread out. The main fixtures are Virgo Discoclub, the gay disco in Sampierdarena on Saturday nights; the Aqua Club sauna in the old town; and Lux Club, a men-only cruise bar in Sampierdarena. Queer-friendly bars such as Loska are tucked into the historic centre, and Liguria Pride fills the city every June.
What is the gay sauna in Genoa?
Aqua Club, at Salita Salvatore Viale 15r near Piazza De Ferrari, is Genoa's gay sauna: a men-only club with dry sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi, cabins, a maze, a video room and a darkroom. It opens in the afternoon and is closed on Tuesdays. Entry requires an ANDDOS or ARCO membership card, which you can buy at the door.
Do I need a membership card for gay venues in Genoa?
For the sauna and the cruise bar, yes. As in the rest of Italy, Aqua Club and Lux Club are private clubs that require a national membership card (ANDDOS or ARCO, depending on the venue), sold on the spot with ID and valid for a year at other member clubs across Italy. Bars and the disco usually just charge entry.
When is Liguria Pride in Genoa?
In June. Liguria Pride 2026 was held in Genoa on Saturday 13 June, with the parade leaving Via San Benedetto at 16:00 and ending in Piazza De Ferrari, followed by the Pride Village between De Ferrari and the Giardini Luzzati. Arcigay Genova is one of the organisers.
Is Genoa gay-friendly?
Genoa is a liberal, working port city and generally relaxed about gay visitors, especially in the historic centre. Italy has had civil unions since 2016, though not full marriage. Like any port, the narrow caruggi of the old town can be rough late at night, so stick to busy streets after midnight.
