Gay Ollantaytambo: the honest 2026 guide

The honest summary: Ollantaytambo is an Inca town of about 3,050 people (2017 census) at 2,792 metres in Peru's Sacred Valley, and most visitors know it as the place where the trains to Machu Picchu leave from. It has no gay bar, no gay sauna, no LGBTQ+ group and no hotel that calls itself gay, and none of that changed when we checked in October 2026. Peru's laws are thinner than its neighbours', and the valley is rural and Catholic. In practice, same-sex couples who keep a low profile in public pass through every day without trouble. Come for the fortress, the Inca streets and the early train. For a night out, plan on Lima.

Legal in one line: Sex between men has been legal in Peru since 1924 and the age of consent is the same for everyone. There is no same-sex marriage, civil union or gender identity law. The Constitutional Tribunal turned down marriage cases in 2020 (Ugarteche) and 2022 (Susel Paredes). Since 2017, Legislative Decree 1323 treats hate based on sexual orientation or gender identity as an aggravating factor in crimes. Law 32331 (May 2025) ties public bathrooms to sex at birth. Keiko Fujimori has been president since 28 July 2026, with a conservative Congress.

Bars and nightlife

Ollantaytambo has no gay bar or club, and we found no regular queer night. After dark the town runs on restaurants and a few pub-restaurants around the Plaza de Armas and Calle Ventiderio, and most of the people in them are other travellers who have to get up for a 5 a.m. train. Evenings end early. Being a same-sex couple at dinner draws little attention in the tourist places; open affection in the street draws more, especially away from the plaza.

If you want a gay bar on this trip, Lima is the place: it has the country's only real scene. Cusco, 72 km away, has no dedicated gay bar either (Nomadic Boys, September 2026), though a few clubs there are known as gay-friendly. See our Cusco guide and Lima guide.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

  • Asiri Pub (on the plaza) and Pub-Restobar Second Floor (Calle Ventiderio) were listed as LGBTQ+ bars by an automatic import, ours included. They are ordinary pubs. Search results that call them "gay bars" are quoting old GayOut pages, so treat them as wrong. We have removed the label.
  • Spa Valle Sagrado, Vida Spa Massages and Kusy Ccoyllor once showed up here as "gay saunas". They are mainstream massage spas aimed at sore-legged hikers, not saunas.
  • DE ELLAS Resto Bar (Calle del Horno) has a name that sometimes gets read as a lesbian bar. We found nothing that describes it as LGBTQ+, so we don't list it as one.

Saunas and cruising

There is no gay sauna in Ollantaytambo or anywhere in the Sacred Valley, and we don't list any cruising areas. Apps work here, but the town is small, most profiles are other tourists, and local users tend to be discreet. Meet in public first, as you would anywhere.

Where to stay

No hotel in Ollantaytambo markets itself as gay or gay-owned, and we have not given any of them a gay label. What matters more is where in town you sleep.

Ask for una cama matrimonial (a double bed) when you book. Small family guesthouses sometimes assume two men want twin beds.

Pride and events

There is no Pride march in Ollantaytambo or the Sacred Valley. The nearest are the Marcha del Orgullo Cusco, held on Saturday 4 July in 2026, and Lima's Marcha del Orgullo, on Saturday 27 June 2026, which is the largest in Peru. Neither had announced 2027 dates at the time of writing.

The town's own big date is the Señor de Choquekillka festival at Pentecost (24 May in 2026; Pentecost 2027 falls on 16 May), four days of processions and costumed dancers that fill the plaza and the hotels. Book early if your dates overlap.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: Cusco airport (CUZ) is the gateway. The new Chinchero airport is not expected before late 2027 or 2028. From Cusco, shared colectivos leave from Calle Pavitos and take about 1.5 hours over the 72 km via Chinchero and Urubamba. Taxis and private transfers cost more but leave when you want.
  • Machu Picchu trains: PeruRail and Inca Rail both run from Ollantaytambo station to Aguas Calientes in about 1.5 hours. Machu Picchu tickets are timed and tied to a circuit, and the official seller is tuboleto.cultura.pe. Buy both well ahead in the dry season. More in our Aguas Calientes guide.
  • Inca Trail: the classic trek starts at Km 82 (Piscacucho), about 30 minutes by road from town. Permits sell out months ahead and you must go with a licensed operator.
  • The fortress: entry is only with the Boleto Turístico del Cusco: S/130 for the full 10-day ticket, or S/70 for the 2-day partial circuit that covers Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Chinchero and Moray.
  • Altitude: 2,792 m is lower than Cusco (about 3,400 m), which is why many people sleep here first. Take the first day slowly anyway.
  • Money: carry soles in cash. Small places don't take cards, and the town's few ATMs can run dry at busy times.
  • Health: there's a basic health centre in town; anything serious means Cusco.

A few words

  • Mi pareja — my partner (works for any gender)
  • Una cama matrimonial, por favor — a double bed, please
  • ¿Dónde está la estación de tren? — where is the train station?
  • Sulpayki — thank you, in Quechua (you'll hear it in the valley)

FAQ

Is Ollantaytambo safe for gay travellers?

Generally, yes for visitors. It lives on tourism and we found no reported anti-LGBTQ+ incidents in the Cusco region from 2024 to 2026. But Peru gives same-sex couples no legal recognition and attitudes in the valley are conservative, so most couples keep affection low-key in public.

Are there gay bars in Ollantaytambo?

No. Lists that call Asiri Pub or Second Floor gay bars are wrong. For gay nightlife, go to Lima.

Can two men share a double room?

Yes. We know of no hotel in town that refuses same-sex couples, and international chains and booking sites treat it as routine. Ask for a cama matrimonial so you don't get twin beds.
