Rain on the cobbles of Temple Bar, the smell of hops drifting over the Liffey from St James's Gate, and a queue of lads in damp jackets on Capel Street waiting to get into Pantibar. Dublin's gay nightlife is warm, chatty and built around the pub: you come for a pint and the craic, and the flirting happens at the bar. What Dublin doesn't have is a cruise-bar strip. We found no dedicated darkroom bar or sex club operating in the city in 2025–2026. Indoor cruising here means one place, The Boilerhouse sauna on Crane Lane, plus a handful of ticketed leather and rubber parties through the year. Plan around those and you won't be disappointed.
Legal in one line: Ireland decriminalised sex between men in 1993, voted for same-sex marriage by referendum in 2015 and lets adults change their legal gender by self-declaration under the Gender Recognition Act 2015; gay saunas and fetish parties are legal businesses. Sex in public is not: under section 45 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017, sexual intercourse, buggery or masturbation in a public place is an offence, with up to six months in prison and a fine of up to €1,000 on summary conviction, or up to two years and €2,500 on indictment.
How Dublin cruising works
Dublin is a small scene with a long memory. Most nights start in the gay bars, where meeting someone is a conversation, not a corridor. For anything more, men go to the sauna, use the apps, or wait for one of the city's fetish parties, which run a few times a year rather than every week. If you're coming from Berlin, Amsterdam or Madrid, adjust your expectations: there is no Dublin equivalent of a Schöneberg cruise bar, and no adult cinema with cabins that we could confirm as open in 2025–2026.
For a drink before or after, the main gay bars are close together: Pantibar (7–8 Capel Street) and Pennylane (2 Strand Street Great) on the north side, and The George (89 South Great George's Street) on the south side. They're friendly, talkative places: Pantibar is cosy and chatty early in the week, and Pennylane is a cocktail bar with music you can talk over, where striking up a conversation with the next stool is perfectly normal. Pennylane and Pantibar are also where Dublin Leather Weekend holds its socials. Our gay Dublin guide covers the bars in full.
Fetish parties and men's events
OinK (Out in Kink) at DV8
OinK runs leather, rubber and latex parties in Dublin, usually at DV8 Bar & Venue on James's Street in Dublin 8, near the Guinness brewery. Its next party is listed for Saturday 7 November 2026, from 21:00 to 03:00, and listings ask guests to come dressed in leather, rubber or latex; OinK publishes its full dress code on outinkink.ie, so check it before you go, as we couldn't confirm exactly what the door enforces. OinK also holds parties around Pride, and a Pride 2027 edition, "The Pig Pen", has been announced for June 2027 with dates to follow. The listings don't say whether entry is men-only, so read the event page before you buy a ticket. Prices weren't published at the time of writing.
Dublin Leather Weekend
Dublin Leather Weekend is run by Leathermen of Ireland each January. The fifth edition took place from 23 to 25 January 2026, with a meet-and-greet at Pennylane, a Puppy Ireland gathering and a rubber event at Pantibar, a leather dinner, a history walk with the activist and archivist Tonie Walsh, and the crowning of Mr Dublin Leather 2026 at DV8. It is a social weekend rather than a cruise event, but it is the best time of year to meet the city's leather and fetish men. Dates for 2027 hadn't been published when we checked; watch leathermenofireland.ie.
Other nights
Nimhneach ran a series of ticketed alternative nights in 2026 at the Sound House, upstairs at the Wiley Fox on Eden Quay, with parties listed in January, February, April and June and tickets at €25. GCN lists it among the year's fetish events; it isn't billed as men-only, so check the next date and the door policy on its socials.
The sauna
The Boilerhouse (12 Crane Lane, Temple Bar) is the city's men-only gay sauna and the centre of Dublin's indoor cruising. Travel Gay says it opened in 1997 and describes five floors with a dry sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, private cabins, a sling area, a TV lounge, a smoking area and a café bar. Listings give a midday or 13:00 opening, with closing around 02:00 from Monday to Wednesday and 03:00 or 04:00 on Thursday; it runs round the clock only at the weekend, from Friday afternoon until the early hours of Monday. Listings differ slightly, so call reception on 01 677 3130 to check hours and prices before you go. Visitor reviews from May to July 2026 confirm it's open. For the full picture, see our guide to Dublin's gay saunas.
Gear shopping
Basic Instincts (8 Eustace Street, Temple Bar) is an adult and fetish shop selling leather, clothing, toys and DVDs, useful if you've arrived for a fetish party without the right gear. It is a shop, not a cruise venue: we found no evidence of video cabins or a cinema.
Closed: The Dock (21 Upper Ormond Quay), was still trading in 2017 but is now listed as closed by misterb&b.
History: The Gym on Dame Lane, one of Ireland's first gay saunas, closed in 1998; its regulars moved to The Boilerhouse.
Outdoors: why we don't send you to the parks or the dunes
Older guides and cruising apps name Dublin parks and beaches as cruising areas. We don't list them or give directions. Section 45 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017 makes sex or masturbation in a public place an offence, and the Act defines a public place as any place the public can get into, with or without permission or a charge. A Garda can arrest you without a warrant. Dublin's big parks and strands are busy family spaces with dog walkers, joggers and wardens, and isolated spots after dark are where people get robbed. Use the sauna or the apps instead.
Local colour
- The pint first. A Dublin night starts with a pint of stout in a pub, and the gay bars are no exception. Order at the bar, and if someone buys you a drink, it's your round next.
- The chipper. Fish and chips or a spice bag from a chipper is the classic end to the night on the way to the bus.
- Capel Street. Pantibar and the north-side bars sit on Capel Street, which is now largely pedestrianised and full of late-night food spots, a good place to wander between venues.
- History on foot. Tonie Walsh, the activist and archivist who co-founded GCN and helped create what became the Irish Queer Archive, leads Lavender Walk, a 90-minute queer history tour of the city that ran daily during Dublin Pride in 2025 and 2026, starting from Barnardo Square beside City Hall. He also led the history walk at Dublin Leather Weekend 2026. Watch the Dublin Pride programme for the next dates.
- Getting home: Transport for Ireland lists 24-hour bus routes running seven days a week, including the 15, 39a, 41, 80, C1, C2, C5, C6, E1, E2, F1, F2, G1, G2 and N4. On Friday and Saturday nights twelve Nitelink routes (7n, 29n, 31n, 33n, 42n, 46n, 49n, 69n, 70n, 77n, 84n and 88n) leave the city centre, at a reduced adult Leap Card fare of €2.40 at the time of writing. Check the TFI Live app for times.
- Cards and cash: cards and contactless are widely accepted in Dublin, but carry some euro for cloakrooms and lockers.
- Lockers: leave your phone, wallet and keys in the locker at the sauna or the cloakroom at a party.
- No photos: at the sauna and fetish parties, the phone stays away.
- Consent: "no" is always enough, and you can always leave.
- Health: The HSE provides PrEP free to eligible people through public PrEP clinics, and the Gay Men's Health Service in Dublin runs free STI testing and PrEP clinics. Anyone in the Republic aged 17+ can order a free home STI test kit from sh24.ie, and the HSE's sexual health information for gay and bisexual men is on man2man.ie. If you think you've been exposed to HIV, go to an emergency department or STI clinic quickly to ask about PEP. In an emergency, call 112 or 999.
- Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose someone else.
- Apps: Grindr is widely used in Dublin, and apps do much of the work that cruise bars do in bigger European cities.
- Dia dhuit – hello. Fáilte – welcome.
- Go raibh maith agat – thank you.
- Sláinte – cheers.
- Aerach – gay. Bród – pride.
- Baile Átha Cliath – Dublin, as you'll see it on the buses.
- Craic – fun, a good time ("what's the craic?" means "what's going on?").
- Gardaí – the police; one officer is a Garda.
- Your round – your turn to buy the drinks.
Practical tips
Pride
Dublin Pride 2026 ran from 24 to 28 June under the theme "One Story – Many Voices". The parade on Saturday 27 June left O'Connell Street shortly after 12:30, crossed the Liffey at Talbot Memorial Bridge and ended at the Pride Village in Merrion Square, and GCN reported tens of thousands on the streets. The festival is usually held in late June; dates for 2027 hadn't been announced at the time of writing. OinK's Pride party is planned again for June 2027. See the Dublin city page for updates.
