At lunchtime on a weekday, Centro is all office shirts, lanyards and street vendors, with the trams gliding past the old theatres of Cinelândia. Look a little closer and some of those office shirts are slipping through a narrow doorway, up a flight of stairs to a mezzanine, for an hour that has nothing to do with lunch. That is pegação, the carioca word for cruising, and in Rio it happens mostly downtown, not on the beach. The scene has changed a lot in 2026: São Paulo's famous Dédalos opened a 24-hour branch on Avenida Calógeras, while the old cabin bars and adult cinemas of Centro carry on, some of them looking their age. Here is what was running in late 2026, what to expect inside, and how to get home safely.

Legal in one line: sex between men is legal in Brazil, same-sex marriage has been recognised since 2013, and homophobia has been treated as a crime akin to racism since 2019. Cruise bars, cabin bars and saunas are legal private venues for adults. Sex in public is a crime under Article 233 of the Penal Code: see the box on the law and safety below.

How cruising works in Rio

Forget the postcard. The gay stretch of Ipanema beach, in front of Rua Farme de Amoedo near Posto 9, is where Rio's gay life is most visible, but it's a social scene: sungas, volleyball, caipirinhas, applause at sunset, and drinks on Farme afterwards. It isn't a cruising ground, and treating it as one would go down badly. The cruising happens indoors, and the map is simple:

• Centro and Cinelândia: the cruise club, the cabin bars, the sex shops with video booths and the old adult cinemas. Busiest at lunchtime and after work on weekdays, quiet and empty at night and at weekends, apart from Dédalos.
• Zona Sul and Lapa: the saunas, plus a late-night darkroom in Copacabana. Busiest after beach hours and at weekends.
• Apps: Grindr and Hornet are both widely used, Hornet more than in Europe. They are also where Rio's best-known robbery scam starts, so read the warning box below.

Dédalos Rio · Av. Calógeras 6, Centro

The Rio branch of São Paulo's 24-hour cruise club had a soft opening on 20 May 2026, with rooms and services added in stages and an official launch planned for August, according to Rio Gay Guide. Its website advertises opening 24 hours a day, every day, and local reports say round-the-clock opening began in August 2026. It's a men's cruise bar with dark rooms and themed nights; there is no sauna, steam room or pool. Wednesdays have free-drink promotions and draw the biggest crowds, and on some Sunday afternoons there's an open-bar party with a football-shirt dress code and nothing below the waist. Entry is for men aged 18 and over, and you need an official photo ID; early Google reviewers mention a queue and bag checks at the door, and affordable entry with promotions. Prices aren't published, so check dedalosrio.com.br or Instagram (@dedalosrio), where discount coupons are posted. It has quickly become the main late-night cruising venue in the city.

Seven Bar (Seven Bar de Cabines) · Praça da República 141, 2nd floor, Centro

A long-running men-only cruising bar on the second floor of a building on Praça da República, with a bar, a cabin area and darker play areas. VamosGay describes it as well known, with stricter rules on phones than most. Google reviews from 2026 are mixed: some praise a clean, well-organised space and good service, while others say it has declined since a change of management, that it's only busy on party nights, and that prices are high for what's on offer. Hours and parties are posted on sevenbar.com.br; phone +55 21 97520-2343 if in doubt.



K7 Cabines Centro · R. Teófilo Otoni 164, mezzanine (sobreloja), Centro

A small sex shop with private video cabins and a cruising zone on the mezzanine of a downtown building; the brand also has a branch in Niterói. Recent Google reviewers like the friendly reception and the tunnel, and say the cabins have bins and are kept clean, but also mention cramped space, a very small toilet, loud music and, in February 2026, no lockers. One reviewer called the street dark and hidden, so go in daylight and after work rather than late. Hours and prices aren't published; check k7cabines.com.br.

Sexy Rose · R. Álvaro Alvim 37, Cinelândia

Part sex shop, part cruising spot, in the old cinema street behind the Theatro Municipal. Rio Gay Guide describes private cabins with screens showing gay and straight porn and two darkrooms, with entry at about R$20. It's busiest at weekday lunchtimes and from about 17:00.



Black Cat · Copacabana

A Copacabana bar with electronic music and a tourist-heavy crowd, where, according to Rio Gay Guide, the darkroom usually opens around 02:00. The same guide says it has been quieter since Dédalos opened. Check the current schedule on Instagram (@blackcat.copa) or X (@barblackcat) before you go.

Taurus Bar · Rua da Lapa, Lapa

A small gay bar in Lapa that appears in LGBT+ maps of the city. We couldn't confirm 2026 opening hours or whether it has a cruising area, so treat it as a bar for a drink and check before you go.



Adult cinemas

Cinelândia was once lined with cinemas, and a few of the old ones survived by switching to adult films. They were never exclusively gay, but their mainly male afternoon audiences made them part of the city's cruising map for decades.

Cine-Theatro Íris · R. da Carioca 49, Centro

Opened in 1909 and protected as a heritage building, the Íris began showing pornographic films in the 1960s or early 1980s, depending on the account, and its audience has long been mainly male. It has had a rocky couple of years: closed in July 2025 for repairs, reopened in August, and shut again on 10 September 2025 by the city and the Defesa Civil, which found a deteriorating ceiling over the auditorium, Diário do Rio reported. In November 2026, Tempo Real RJ reported it was open again with adult programming and planning pay-what-you-can guided tours of the building. Check that it's open before making a special trip.

The saunas, briefly

Every one of Rio's men's saunas has a darkroom, cabins or a maze, so for most visitors they are the easiest and safest place to cruise. Full details, prices and the escort situation are on our Rio de Janeiro saunas guide. In short:

• Rio G Spa (R. Teixeira de Melo 16, Ipanema): one block from the beach, international crowd, darkroom and maze, and a no-drugs, no-rent-boys policy.
• Point 202 (R. Siqueira Campos 202, Copacabana) and Club 117 (R. Cândido Mendes 117, Glória): busy, with garotos de programa (male escorts) working.
• SB in Botafogo: several floors with a darkroom, a cinema room and theme nights.
• Chupps Club (R. do Rezende 28, Lapa): the party sauna, open until 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, with themed nights.

Parties

Casa Preta runs men's parties centred on Black visibility, open to all, on Wednesdays and Sundays at a location shared only with guests; Rio Gay Guide describes them as bareback parties, sometimes held together with Chupps. Contact the organisers on X (@festacasapreta). If you go to a party like this, PrEP and the PEP advice below matter.

Closed or uncertain:

• Termas Leblon / Leblon Spa Club has been reported closed since 2020, and Club 29 in Botafogo is widely reported closed.
• Cine Orly (R. Alcindo Guanabara 21) and Cine Rex (R. Álvaro Alvim 33), both in Cinelândia, were listed as gay cinemas in 2017; we found no 2025–2026 confirmation that either still operates.

Outdoors: the Aterro do Flamengo

The Aterro do Flamengo (Parque do Flamengo) is the long bayside park between Glória and Botafogo, completed in 1965, with gardens by Roberto Burle Marx and the Museum of Modern Art at its northern end. By day it belongs to joggers, cyclists, footballers and families. After dark, some quieter, tree-lined stretches have a long reputation as a place where men meet, and visitors' reviews warn that it is dangerous after sunset. Nothing is organised, and we don't give directions. If you want to see the park, go in daylight; for cruising, the indoor venues above are legal, a short ride away, and open at all hours.

The law and your safety:

• The law: under Article 233 of Brazil's Penal Code, performing an obscene act (ato obsceno) in a public place, or one open or exposed to the public, is punishable by three months to a year in detention or a fine. Being gay in a park is legal; sex in one is not.
• Robbery: empty parks and dark streets at night are where thieves look for people who won't go to the police. Carry only your phone, one card and a little cash, and don't follow anyone into a dark corner.
• Police: if the police approach you, stay calm and polite and show ID; carry a copy of your passport. Call 190 for the police and 192 for an ambulance (SAMU).
• Tourist police: crimes against visitors are handled by the DEAT (Delegacia Especial de Apoio ao Turismo), the police unit that broke up the 2025 app gang described below.

"Boa noite, Cinderela": the app robbery

In November 2025 Rio's tourist police arrested a 22-year-old man who posed as an escort and, with others, met gay tourists on dating apps, including Grindr, at beaches, bars and hotels in Copacabana and Ipanema. Pheeno and Metrópoles reported that the gang chose older and foreign victims who looked wealthy, spiked their drinks, then took phones and cash and made bank transfers. Cases cited by police included an Italian tourist who lost about €19,000 in June 2025 and a visitor from Recife who lost over R$60,000 in transfers. A woman sometimes joined the meetings. How to protect yourself:

• Meet new contacts in a busy bar or at one of the venues first, never straight at your hotel or flat.
• Never accept a drink you didn't watch being poured, and never leave yours unattended.
• Lock your banking apps with a separate PIN, and keep daily transfer limits low while travelling.
• Tell a friend where you're going and share your location.

A carioca afternoon, the local way

Downtown cruising runs on office hours, so do as the locals do: a prato feito (the set lunch of rice, beans, meat and salad) at a boteco counter, a cafezinho standing up, and then whatever the afternoon brings. After work, the bars around Cinelândia and Lapa fill with men drinking chopp, ice-cold draught beer, served with bolinhos de bacalhau (salt-cod fritters). Late at night in Copacabana or Lapa, the carioca way to end things is a bowl of açaí or a joelho, a ham-and-cheese pastry from the corner snack bar, before the ride home.

Practical tips

• Getting home: the metro is handy by day (Cinelândia, Carioca, Uruguaiana and Glória stations serve Centro). At night use Uber or 99 door to door, even for a few blocks; order the car while you're still inside and step out when it arrives. Centro is empty at night and at weekends.
• ID and entry: Dédalos asks for official photo ID. Entry at the cabin bars is cheap (around R$20 at Sexy Rose); check promotions online before you go.
• Paying: cards work in most venues. Pix, Brazil's instant payment, needs a Brazilian bank account, so carry a card and some cash in small notes.
• Lockers and phones: not every cabin bar has lockers, so leave your passport and spare cards in the hotel. No photos inside cruise spaces, ever; Seven Bar is known for strict phone rules.
• Garotos: male escorts work openly in some saunas and bars. If you're not interested, a friendly "não, obrigado" is enough; if you are, agree the price first.
• Consent: "no" (não) is enough, in any room, at any time.
• Health: Brazil's public health system, the SUS, offers free HIV testing, PrEP and PEP. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to a public UPA emergency unit or a hospital emergency room and ask for PEP. Bring your own PrEP supply for a short trip.
• Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose for someone else. Call 192 in an emergency.

Pride

The 31st Parada do Orgulho LGBTI+ do Rio de Janeiro is set for Sunday 22 November 2026 on Avenida Atlântica along Copacabana Beach, with trios elétricos (sound trucks), DJs and drag. It's the busiest weekend of the year for the cruise club and the saunas, along with Carnival in February or March. Book accommodation early.
