About the event

After premiering at the de Young Museum in San Francisco last year, the major exhibition dedicated to manga arrives at the Brooklyn Museum, bringing together over 600 original works by artists ranging from pioneers like Chiba Tetsuya to contemporary phenomena like Oda Eiichiro and Yoshinaga Fumi. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will rediscover genre milestones such as "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" and "One Piece," series that helped transform Japanese comics into a global phenomenon. In parallel, the museum presents "Manga Before Manga: Japanese Art From the Collection," a complementary exhibition that goes back centuries in Japanese narrative tradition, with highlights ranging from 15th-century scrolls to Edo-period glazed porcelain and ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Katsushika Hokusai — the latter being one of the figures responsible for popularizing the term "manga" itself.
