About the event

More than 250 works from Gustave Fayet's extraordinary collection, now dispersed around the world, are reunited for the first time in a century in this exhibition that occupies all spaces of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, alongside 375 creations by Fayet himself, most of them never exhibited and specially restored for the occasion. An indefatigable collector, artist, and entrepreneur, Gustave Fayet (1865-1925) was one of the first to collect Van Gogh, exhibit Picasso, and assemble a true “museum” of Gauguin in his own home in Paris, gathering nearly 200 works by the painter. Among the highlights is the return to France of Van Gogh's “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear,” which has not been exhibited in the country since 1937 nor loaned since 1990, presented in dialogue with Gauguin's “Self-Portrait with Palette.” The exhibition also brings together three masterpieces by Gauguin linked to Fayet and his fellow collectors — “The Yellow Christ,” “Self-Portrait with the Yellow Christ,” and “The Breton Calvary” — and reveals to the public for the first time the decorative panels “Day,” “Night,” and “Silence,” which Odilon Redon created for the library of the Abbey of Fontfroide, acquired by Fayet in 1908.
