I Am Plane Image", by Brice Marden at Gagosian
About the event
Twenty years after New York last hosted a Brice Marden exhibition in the city, Gagosian presents "I Am Plane Image," a comprehensive overview of the artist's production in collaboration with his estate. Bringing together six decades of work — with institutional loans from the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum, as well as rarely exhibited pieces from private collections —, the exhibition draws from the artist's own definition of his trajectory: for him, the history of modern art consisted of tightening the relationship between image and plane until they were inseparable. The selection ranges from "Nebraska" (1966), inspired by a road trip through the American Midwest and kept by the artist himself at home his entire life, to the calligraphic paintings of the early 1980s, such as "Study for the Muses (Eagles Mere Version)" (1991-94/1997-99), conceived in his Pennsylvania studio, which he described as his most "zen" space. The six panels of "The Propitious Garden of Plane Image, Second Version" (2000-06) follow a chromatic progression that also meditates on landscape, in the tradition of the Chinese garden, while the exhibition concludes with "The Dance" and "Lingerie" (both 2022-23), the last canvases produced in Marden's studio in Tivoli, New York, and exhibited in his final solo show at Gagosian in 2023.
