jpegs ny" by Thomas Ruff at David Zwirner

Twelve photographs derived from images of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center make up "jpegs ny," a selection from the "jpegs" series that Thomas Ruff presents at David Zwirner, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Conceived by the artist himself as a commemoration of that date, the series had already been exhibited as part of Unlimited at Art Basel this year before arriving in New York. Known for moving between analog and digital exhibitions, computer-generated images, and material collected from newspapers, magazines, and the internet, Ruff manipulates these low-resolution photographs until their pixel structure is revealed, transforming widely disseminated historical records into objects of contemplation on memory and image mediation.
