Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Twenty years after the Met last dedicated an exhibition to Jackson Pollock or Lee Krasner, the museum brings together the two central figures of abstract expressionism in an unprecedented exhibition: the first to compare their careers beyond the couple's 15-year marriage. With 120 works including paintings, works on paper, and period material, produced between the 1930s and 1980s, "Past Continuous" borrows its title from a 1976 Krasner painting and is organized into 12 chapters, opening precisely with the collages the artist produced between 1953 and 1955. Alongside well-known masterpieces, the exhibition promises to reveal lesser-seen works by both artists, tracing how they met, converged, and produced, each in their own way, images that revolutionized modern art — while also investigating how they balanced individuality and mutual influence throughout their relationship.
