About the event

More than 150 works produced before Sidney Nolan moved to the United Kingdom in 1953 make up this major panorama of the artist's formative years in Australia, including his famous series on the outlaw Ned Kelly (1946-47). “Nolan: Origins” traces Nolan's engagement with the places he painted — St Kilda, Wimmera, K’gari (also known as Fraser Island), the Australian Centre, and the landscapes of Ned Kelly's story in northeastern Victoria — as the artist built his unique and enigmatic visual language, redefining perceptions of place and nation in the Australian cultural imagination. The exhibition also investigates how Nolan interrogated the very idea of “Australia,” evoking a sense of place through myths, stories, people, and creatures laden with personal meaning.
