ROT GELB BLAU STAUB" by Sabine Moritz at Galerie Max Hetzler
About the event
Twelve large-format canvases organized in groups of three, her first quadraphonic oil painting, a smaller-scale still life, and a selection of early works on paper comprise this miniature retrospective of Sabine Moritz, her first solo exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler. Moving between abstraction and figuration, the German artist paints intuitively, without preparatory sketches, and the twelve new canvases—organized in four groups of three—are freely inspired by the four elements: fire, air, earth, and water. In the three "Erde" (Earth) paintings, the paint unfolds like fractured glass, in dense layers of brushwork; in "Luft" (Air), sky-blue and petal-pink brushstrokes are balanced with vivid greens and yellows. Since 2023, Moritz has been introducing bodily forms into part of her production, testing the boundary between abstraction and figuration—in her new monumental quadrilogy, female bodies emerge from gestures and bands of paint in a kind of alchemy, evoking both the tradition of art history, from Titian to Picasso, and a raw, instinctive emotion. The exhibition's title, meaning "red yellow blue dust," synthesizes this dialogue between color and matter that runs through the artist's entire body of work.
