Leonora Carrington at Almine Rech
About the event
Horses, dragons, hyenas, birds, and androgynous figures populate this first solo exhibition of Leonora Carrington at Almine Rech, organized in collaboration with the Leonora Carrington Council and rossogranada, bringing together drawing, painting, sculpture, tapestry, and writing throughout the artist's career. Traversing the 20th century and its upheavals—from the rise of fascism to exile in Mexico—Carrington resists any strictly biographical reading: neither muse, nor disciple, nor simple heir to surrealism, she built a profoundly free body of work, indifferent to aesthetic categories or fixed identities. According to curator Mylène Ferrand, the exhibition highlights one of the central aspects of this production—art as a process of transmutation, in which nothing is static: beings change form, borders become porous, and distinct realms mix in a cosmology in constant flux. The metamorphoses that traverse Carrington's work do not belong to an evasive imagination but constitute an alternative way of thinking about the living world, based on continuities, not divisions.
