Marcha del Orgullo LGTBIQ Arequipa
About This Event
Arequipa's Pride march, the Marcha del Orgullo LGTBIQ+, has run since 26 June 2008, when a few hundred people marched and the city administration of the day kept the floats out of the main square. Since 2015 it has been coordinated by the Colectivo Marcha del Orgullo LGTBIQ Arequipa, which brings together local lesbian, trans, feminist and human-rights groups including Movimiento Lesbia, Red LGTB Arequipa and Amnistía Internacional. There was no march in 2020, and in 2021 there was a static protest instead.
It is a political march on a Saturday afternoon in late June, starting at Parque Mayta Cápac in Miraflores and walking about 2.5 km into the historic centre, usually followed by a cultural night. Organisers estimated about 6,000 people in 2023.
The 2026 march (numbered the 18th by El Búho) set off at 1pm on 27 June and ended at Plaza San Francisco. It made news before it started: interim mayor Ruccy Oscco said she would march, drawing protests from anti-abortion groups, though Infobae reported she didn't attend in the end; and Renovación Popular suspended its candidate for regional governor after he donated supplies to the march. The 2027 date hadn't been announced when we checked.
