The honest summary: Santa Rosa is the county seat of Sonoma County, a city of about 178,000 people an hour north of San Francisco, and it has a large, settled LGBTQ+ community but no gay bar. The last bar with gay-bar roots, The Dirty (the old Round Robin on Mendocino Avenue), closed on 1 March 2024. What the city does have is one of California's longer-running county Prides, a busy LGBTQ+ community centre that moved into a bigger home in 2025, a monthly queer dance party, a monthly Pride brunch and a handful of queer-owned and openly welcoming businesses downtown. For gay bars, resorts and a whole town built around a queer crowd, locals drive about 30 minutes west to Guerneville on the Russian River.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage is legal in California, and since Proposition 3 passed on 5 November 2024 (about 63% yes) it is protected in the state constitution; California law bans discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression in employment, housing and businesses open to the public.
Bars and nightlife
There is no dedicated gay or lesbian bar in Santa Rosa as of October 2026. Visit Santa Rosa's own LGBTQ page doesn't list one either; it points to welcoming cafés and queer-owned shops instead. Queer nightlife here happens on fixed nights at mainstream venues:
Vintage Space at the Flamingo (2777 4th St) hosts LUSH, an LGBTQ+ and friends dance party on the second Saturday of every month, 9pm to 2am, 21+. North Bay Bohemian readers voted it the county's best LGBTQ+ event. Tickets go through Eventbrite.
Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen (614 4th St) is where Sonoma County Pride holds its free monthly brunch, on the first Sunday of the month at 11am. It started in October 2026 and is posted on the Santa Rosa GayDar Meetup group.
Brew (555 Healdsburg Ave), a café and taproom on Visit Santa Rosa's LGBTQ list. Community listings show a gay and bi men's mixer here on the last Friday of the month, 4 to 5:30pm, but we found only one source, so check first.
During Pride weekend the bars fill up: in 2026 the kickoff party was at Shady Oak Barrel House (420 1st St) and the official afterparty at the lounge in La Rosa (500 4th St). Drag shows in the area often take place outside the city, for example at The Lounge at Mercy in Cotati, 15 minutes south.
There is no gay sauna or bathhouse in Santa Rosa or anywhere in Sonoma County; the nearest are in San Francisco and the East Bay, about 55 miles south. We found no cruising area backed by more than one current source, so we don't list one. Apps are how most men meet here.
There's no LGBTQ+ bookshop, but Noble Folk Ice Cream & Pie Bar at 539 4th St is LGBTQ-owned (the original shop opened in Healdsburg in 2013), and Positive Images runs a free queer lending library.
Community, support and health
Positive Images is Sonoma County's LGBTQ+ community centre, founded around 1990. It opened a larger centre at 1000 Apollo Way, Suite 110, on 13 September 2025; older listings still show Montgomery Drive. It runs peer support groups, youth and Translife programmes, the queer library and a free clothing room. PFLAG Santa Rosa/Sonoma County meets there on the fourth Wednesday of the month, 6 to 8pm.
Sonoma County Pride, the volunteer group behind the June parade, the monthly brunch and fundraisers through the year.
Face to Face (873 2nd St), the county's HIV organisation, offers free HIV testing and help with PrEP and PEP, Tuesday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Call 707-544-1581 first.
LGBTQ Connection runs drop-in support for LGBTQ+ young people with the VOICES youth centre; check lgbtqconnection.org for its current address and hours.
First Congregational Church (2000 Humboldt St), a United Church of Christ congregation that became Open and Affirming in 1996. Sunday service is at 10am. There is no MCC church in Santa Rosa.
Fountaingrove Lodge, in the Fountaingrove hills, opened in 2013 as the first state-licensed continuing care retirement community in the US built for LGBTQ+ seniors. It's a residence, visited by appointment only.
Pride and events
Sonoma County Pride is the big one. It grew out of a 1987 picnic at Spring Lake, organised by a group called Forward Together. County supervisors voted down Pride resolutions in 1988 and 1989 before recognising Pride Week in 1992, and the first march through Santa Rosa went ahead without a permit. Today the parade runs down Fourth Street on the Saturday of the first weekend in June, at 11am, and ends in a free festival in Old Courthouse Square until 5pm. In 2026 that was 6 June, with a trans rights rally on the Friday and a flag raising at the Rosenberg Building at the start of the month. KTVU put the 40th-anniversary crowd in 2025 at around 20,000. A save-the-date for 4 to 6 June 2027 is circulating on event listings; confirm on sonomacountypride.org before booking.
The Sonoma County Dyke March and Lez-a-Palooza followed in late June (21 June in 2026), also around Old Courthouse Square. Out of town: Russian River Pride in Guerneville is in September (19 and 20 September in 2026), Women's Weekend on the river is in mid-May, and Gay Wine Weekend in Sonoma Valley is in July. For dated events, see the Santa Rosa events page.
Neighbourhoods
Santa Rosa doesn't have a gay district. Downtown, around Old Courthouse Square and Fourth Street, is where the Pride festival, the brunch, Noble Folk and most bars are. West of US-101, Railroad Square is a National Register historic district around the 1904 stone depot, with Hotel La Rose, the Hyatt, the Courtyard and the SMART Downtown station. Just south of downtown, the SOFA arts district (South of A Street) around Juilliard Park has galleries and the Astro Motel. East Fourth Street leads to the Flamingo Resort and Montgomery Village, an open-air shopping centre. Fountaingrove in the northern hills was badly hit by the 2017 Tubbs Fire, which destroyed about 5% of the city's homes.
Where to stay
None of Santa Rosa's hotels market themselves to LGBTQ+ guests, and we found none with TAG Approved or IGLTA membership. For a car-free stay, pick downtown or Railroad Square:
Hotel E, a 39-room boutique hotel in a 1906 bank building right on Old Courthouse Square. Ideal for Pride weekend.
Hotel La Rose, a 1907 stone hotel in Railroad Square.
The Dirty (also called Dirty Bird; formerly the Round Robin), 616 Mendocino Ave: closed on 1 March 2024 after disputes with the landlord. Local press called it one of the county's first gay bars.
Space XXV on Old Courthouse Square: closed around 2012.
Chrome Lotus and the Belvedere: listed in a 2014 travel article as mixed venues; we found nothing recent showing either is open or queer.
Club FAB was in Guerneville, not Santa Rosa, and closed at the end of 2005.
Hilton Sonoma Wine Country and the Fountaingrove Inn burned in the 2017 Tubbs Fire. The Hilton site is being rebuilt as the Round Barn Hotel, which was due to open in late 2026.
Vintners Resort is now Vinarosa Resort & Spa.
Practical tips
Getting there: Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS), on the north edge of town, has nonstops on Alaska, American, Southwest and Delta to cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and Salt Lake City. SFO and Oakland are both around 65 to 70 miles away.
Without a car: the SMART train runs from the airport through Santa Rosa North and Santa Rosa Downtown (Railroad Square) south to Larkspur, where the Golden Gate Ferry continues to San Francisco.
Guerneville: about 20 miles west on River Road. If you're coming for gay nightlife, consider staying there, or book a driver; don't drink and drive on River Road.
Weather: summers are hot and dry, but fog rolls in on many mornings and evenings, so bring a layer. Most rain falls from November to March.
The Charles M. Schulz Museum (2301 Hardies Lane, closed Tuesdays) is the city's best-known sight; Schulz lived and worked in Santa Rosa.
A few words
Locals say "SoCo" for Sonoma County and "the River" for Guerneville and the Russian River towns. "SMART" is the train, "Railroad Square" is the old depot district, and "Pride" without a qualifier means the June parade downtown.
