About this place O. Henry's

O. Henry's holds a rare distinction in the American South: it is one of the longest continuously operating gay bars in the region, having been a fixture on Haywood Street since the 1970s. The bar's survival through the AIDS crisis, the economic cycles that have repeatedly reshaped Asheville, and the commercial pressures that have closed comparable venues across the South speaks to a community loyalty that is the highest compliment a neighbourhood bar can receive. The format is classic American gay bar: pool tables, a modest bar, a jukebox or DJ depending on the night, and a crowd that ranges from long-time regulars who have been coming for decades to first-time visitors discovering the venue for themselves. There is nothing trend-conscious about O. Henry's, which is precisely its appeal. The Haywood Street location puts it in the heart of downtown Asheville, within easy walking distance of the city's restaurant and nightlife clusters. For visitors interested in the history and culture of American gay bars rather than the current nightlife circuit, O. Henry's is the essential Asheville stop — a living piece of LGBTQ+ Southern history that continues to serve its community every week.

Cat and Ricky are our faves!! We literally come here for the bartenders. We come here a handful of times a year from out of town. They remember us and are always so hospitable and friendly. We look forward to coming to O’Henry’s every time we’re in town.
