Atlanta Pride
About This Event
Atlanta Pride is the biggest Pride in the US South and, by its own account, the largest free Pride festival in the country. Its roots go back to a small march in 1971, and Atlanta's role as the gay capital of the South, with Midtown as the centre, gives it real weight: people come in from across Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas and beyond, many from towns where being out is still hard.
The most common question is why it happens in October. The answer is drought, not choice. In 2008, a severe drought led the city to bar large festivals from Piedmont Park, which pushed Pride out of its usual June slot. It returned to the park in autumn, and by 2010 the organisers had made October permanent, tying it to National Coming Out Day on 11 October. The milder weather has helped keep it there, since June in Atlanta is hot and humid.
The festival fills Piedmont Park on Saturday and Sunday and is free, with the Coca-Cola Main Stage, an artist market, a wellness zone and drag and cabaret shows. Saturday usually brings the Trans March, the Bi & Pan March and the Dyke March, all starting from the park's Charles Allen Gate. The Sunday parade steps off at noon from the Civic Center MARTA station, heads up Peachtree Street, turns onto 10th Street and ends near the Charles Allen Gate. Use MARTA, because parking in Midtown is hopeless that weekend. Midtown hotels sell out, so book early. The gay bars around 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue are packed.
The latest edition was the weekend of 10 and 11 October 2026, under the theme "louder and prouder", with US Representative Everton Blair Jr., Georgia's first openly gay member of Congress, as honorary grand marshal. Severe weather forced organisers to cancel all Saturday programming, including the three marches, while the Sunday festival and parade went ahead. Organisers say the weekend draws over 350,000 people. In a tough year for Pride funding across the US, Atlanta Pride reported for 2025 that it gained ten new sponsors and more than doubled its individual donors. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked.

Practical Tips
Take MARTA to Midtown or Arts Center - parking around Piedmont Park is nearly impossible on parade day.
Stake out a parade spot along Peachtree Street by 11am for the noon step-off.
The main stage at Piedmont Park hosts headliners in the late afternoon and evening.
