About this place Pastoral Artisan Cheese, Bread & Wine

Pastoral Artisan Cheese, Bread & Wine is a gay-owned neighborhood shop on North Broadway Street in Chicago, built around the European idea that good food and wine just make life better.

It’s a small, welcoming place, perfect if you’re after carefully chosen artisan cheeses, domestic and international. You can tell someone put real thought into finding every item here; the intimate setting makes that clear.

Beyond the cheese, they bake fresh bread and stock a smart selection of wines and other things that make a cheese board (or dinner) complete. If you’re putting together a picnic, or just want some quality ingredients from a queer-friendly spot, this is the real deal, not some tourist trap. The staff know their stuff and can help you figure out pairings.

Pastoral has two Chicago locations: this original one on North Broadway, and another at 53 E. Lake Street. Either way, it’s an easy stop while you’re out exploring. It’s the kind of shop where you can actually browse, learn a bit about cheese and wine, and support a local LGBTQ+ business all at once.

Honest 5/5. Truly can not recommend this place enough. The people, the quality, and the ambiance made it amazing. From a person coming from Spain, this is what you dream of, a place far from home that makes you feel like home. Well done.

Went above and beyond to procure a Swiss Tête de Moine cheese for my Mother’s Day gift. Fabulous!
