Purely writing this review to talk about the AI slop they’ve decided to use on their cans of beer. Pay real life people for real art, makes me not want to support the establishment as a whole despite the fact the bar is amazing and the service and beer is great

Bouncer was condescending and standoffish. SLC’s night life is finally rebounding after COVID and these goons are an embarrassment to the city and the scene. Hopefully they can get it together

Honestly, I’m very disappointed in this place. This place is not a safe environment. Don’t let the pictures fool you. They do not let immigrants in even with a passport or verification of being over 21. They let people pay them under the table and accept kids under age. My cousin had to get surgery from a broken nose at one of the guards gave him, and they have been accused of violent acts on multiple people. I’m all about a good time the right way and the way you guys are running things is very sad. I don’t respect a place that can’t do their job properly. The guards are there to make it safe, not be the problem.

Was in VIP section and was assaulted by a big lady who claimed to be security. I told the manager and she said to call the police and became aggressive. Then I told the bouncers and they said “you should have fought back.” Well I hope they get condemned by the city since this is not the first review about the staff, terrible manager, bouncers, and incompetent owners. Putting 5 stars to tell you not to fall for their tactics.

Absolutely unacceptable experience. After I was already inside VIP, a bouncer shoved me out of nowhere, leaving my shin bleeding. I wasn’t causing any problems, and his behavior was completely unprovoked and aggressive. The staff did nothing to help or check on me afterward. I’ve never been treated so poorly—avoid this place if you care about safety or basic respect.

Was in line over the weekend to get in. The bouncers were unnecessarily aggressive towards people in line. I watched one yell at a guy who was just waiting for his friends to get in, who were girls. Understandably he’s going to want to make sure they get in okay. Bouncer yelled at him and pushed him to get him out of line. I didn’t see the bouncer’s name but he was wearing a gold chain (probably fake) and a black new balance beanie. Shades needs to replace these bouncers that consistently cause problems or they will have no business. You can look at other reviews in the past, bouncers assaulting patrons seems to be a big problem. Will be going elsewhere next time.

The bouncer wearing the gold chain and small New Balance beanie, black shirt, was completely out of control and unprofessional on October 18th. I was already inside when my friend, his girlfriend, and her friend were entering. After getting his ID scanned, my friend simply waited about 10 seconds for them so they could go in together, and this bouncer started yelling at him for no reason. The stairs were empty — he wasn’t blocking anyone — and the bouncer just kept escalating it until he kicked him out. The behavior was aggressive, unnecessary, and honestly embarrassing for a place like Shades. No one deserves to be treated like that for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Management seriously needs to take a look at who they’re hiring to represent their business. I hope management takes this seriously — several well-respected people in the Utah community are aware of what happened and are watching how it’s handled.

I’ve been coming to this bar for years and have always had good experiences, but last night (October 18th, 2025) was completely different. I went with my girlfriend and her friend, had my ID scanned first, and politely stepped to the side to wait for them — just 10–15 seconds — so we could go in together and they wouldn’t be left alone outside. The bouncer immediately started telling me to move up the stairs. I kindly explained that I was waiting for my girlfriend, even started moving up the stairs slowly, but after repeating myself several times and him continuing to yell, I got understandably frustrated. Even though the stairs were completely empty and I wasn’t blocking anyone, he kicked me out and refused to let me speak with a manager. I was completely sober and trying to handle things respectfully until he escalated the situation for no reason. It felt like an unnecessary show of power and extremely poor customer service. Any decent boyfriend or friend would’ve done the same thing. If a manager sees this and wants to know which bouncer it was, he was wearing a New Balance beanie and a gold chain.
