It is not a coastal gay mecca, but it punches above its weight, anchored by one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars in the United States and a Pride festival that draws visitors from across the region. The heart of gay Des Moines is the Historic East Village, the walkable district just east of the Des Moines River around East 5th Street and East Grand Avenue.
