The Community Access Program at the Des Moines Art Center hosts a free monthly LGBTQIA+ art gathering for individuals ages 18+, held on the second Thursday of each month from 6:00–8:00 PM. The Community Access Program partners with nonprofits and other organizations in the community to provide free art workshops to folks that might face barriers to access.

Each session begins with a guided visit into the museum where participants will spend time with a piece of artwork made by a queer artist or explores themes and experiences connected to the queer community. From there, the group transitions into the studio to create their own artwork inspired by what they’ve seen and discussed. This program is designed to provide a welcoming and affirming space for LGBTQIA+ individuals to explore creative expression, connect with others, and engage with queer perspectives in art.
