Late afternoon in Fort Myers smells of warm asphalt and river water. The Caloosahatchee runs wide and brown past the brick streets of the River District, pelicans sit on the pilings, and out on Cleveland Avenue the strip malls light up one neon sign at a time. Somewhere among them a rainbow flag hangs outside a low building where the happy hour starts at noon and the drag queens arrive after dark. Be clear about what this is: a small, friendly, local scene, not a gay resort. There is one gay bar in Fort Myers, Rascals, and one across the river in Cape Coral, Cruisers Lounge, plus a June Pride festival downtown. Everything is a drive apart, and the beaches are still rebuilding after three hurricanes in three years.

Legal in one line: sex between men is legal and same-sex marriage has been legal in Florida since 2015, but there is no explicit statewide LGBTQ+ anti-discrimination law, the state has passed a series of laws restricting trans people and drag performances in front of minors since 2023 (see below), and the drinking age is 21.

The scene in brief

Fort Myers sits on the south bank of the Caloosahatchee River in Lee County, south-west Florida, with Cape Coral spread across the canals on the north bank and Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island to the south-west. There is no gay district. Rascals is on Cleveland Avenue (US-41), the city's main commercial road, south of downtown. Cruisers Lounge is in South Cape, the bar and restaurant quarter of Cape Coral. The River District downtown is where most people go out to eat and drink, and it is home to the Goldberg LGBTQ+ Center, run by the nonprofit Visuality, which now produces SWFL Pride. Expect a mix of locals, retirees and, from roughly November to April, winter visitors from the north.

The gay bars

Rascals · 3758 Cleveland Ave, Fort Myers

Travel Gay describes it simply: "The pride flag flies outside Rascals, the only gay bar in Fort Myers." misterb&b calls it a gay-owned bar that draws a mixed crowd of all ages, with regular drag shows, karaoke nights and game nights. Think neighbourhood bar rather than polished club, with the drag shows as the main event.

When: listed as open every day from 12:00 to 02:00. The local tourism board's Pride-month guide (2025) mentions a happy hour from noon to 20:00 daily, which makes it an easy afternoon stop. Show nights change, so check the bar's Facebook page (rascalsnightclubfm) for the week's line-up. Phone +1 239-931-9976. Bring photo ID.

Cruisers Lounge · 1517 SE 47th Terrace, Cape Coral

Across the river in South Cape, Visit Fort Myers calls Cruisers "a laid-back gay bar in downtown Cape Coral", within walking distance of other bars and restaurants, with karaoke, dancing and drag. The lounge has been a local bar for decades; it was taken over by new owner Chris Schimmel in July 2017 and reopened as a "bar for everyone" aimed at the LGBTQ+ community, with two full bars, a DJ booth, a raised stage and pool tables, according to the local paper at the time.

What to expect: listings in 2025 and 2026 mention a Saturday night drag show, drag queen bingo and karaoke, and a kitchen (reported as BLEW) whose food gets good reviews. It played a part in Pride 2026, hosting the Pre-Pride White Party on 12 June, and it has been the after-party venue for Cape Coral's own Pride weekend on 47th Terrace. Listed hours are roughly 13:00 to 02:00 on weekdays (to midnight on Mondays) and 12:00 to 02:00 at the weekend; confirm before driving over. Phone +1 239-673-8002; Facebook @cruiserscape.

Closed: The Bottom Line, 3090 Evans Ave, Fort Myers, for about 30 years a club for the local LGBT community, closed in 2017 and its building was put up for sale; Cape Coral's Tubby's had also closed by then. Ignore older lists that still show them.

A night out, the Fort Myers way

Start early: the light over the Caloosahatchee is at its best around sunset, and the River District has rooftop bars and restaurants along First Street. Then drive (or ride) down Cleveland Avenue to Rascals for happy hour stragglers and the evening show. Saturday is the night to cross the river to Cruisers for its drag show, and South Cape's other bars on 47th Terrace are a few steps away. Weeknights are quiet and local; winter weekends, when the snowbirds are in town, are the busiest.

Eat local while you are here. Florida's stone crab season opens on 15 October, and Lee County celebrates it: the StoneCrab Music Festival on Pine Island is on 8 November 2026, with live music, stone crab and local seafood. A grouper sandwich by the water is the everyday version.

Fort Myers Beach and the hurricanes

Hurricane Ian came ashore as a Category 4 storm in September 2022 with a storm surge of 10 to 15 feet, wiping out much of Fort Myers Beach. Two years later Helene brought widespread flooding and Milton dumped up to five feet of sand on the island. Many businesses have rebuilt, some more than once, and the town's mayor describes the island as being in "full build mode". The pier is being rebuilt about 70% longer than before, a beach renourishment project has brought in over a million tons of sand, and Crescent Beach Family Park, by Times Square, reopened in August 2026 after nearly four years fenced off. The sand is back and the Gulf is as warm as ever, but expect building sites; check that your hotel or restaurant is open before booking. The American Sand Sculpting Championship returns to the beach from 19 to 23 November 2026.

Hurricane season runs from June to November. If a storm is forecast, follow Lee County's instructions, and expect bars and LeeTran services to change their hours or close.

SWFL Pride

SWFL Pride was started in 2009 by the nonprofit Pride-SWFL and for years was held at the Alliance for the Arts, usually in October. The 2025 festival, planned for November, was cancelled for lack of sponsor money, and Pride-SWFL joined forces with Visuality, Inc. to bring it back.

The 2026 festival took place on Saturday 13 June, from 14:00 to 22:00, for the first time in the River District: two blocks of First Street and Lee Street in front of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, 2301 First St. Entry was free, with about 70 vendors, two DJs, a drag show of 10 to 12 performers hosted by local queen Alyssa Lemay, and police on the barricades. Organisers expected 1,500 to 2,000 people and kept the street festival family-friendly. Around it ran a Pre-Pride White Party at Cruisers on 12 June, a rooftop dance party at the Davis Art Center on the Saturday night and a drag brunch at 10 Twenty Five on Sunday 14 June. No 2027 date had been announced at the time of writing; watch visualityswfl.org.

Cape Coral has held its own Pride weekend on SE 47th Terrace, with a Saturday parade and a Sunday drag brunch (its fifth edition was in March 2023), with Cruisers hosting the after-party. Check locally for current dates.

Florida in 2026: what visitors should know

    • Couples: same-sex marriage has been legal since 2015 and couples should have no legal problems. Away from the bars, many keep public affection low-key.
    • Drag: the 2023 Protection of Children Act (SB 1438) threatens fines, loss of licences and criminal penalties for venues that admit children to "adult live performances". A federal judge blocked it in 2023 after a challenge by Hamburger Mary's in Orlando, but in August 2026 the full 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 8–5 that the law is constitutional and lifted the block, so the state can now enforce it. Drag itself is not banned and the bars are 21 and over, but all-ages drag events, including brunches, may set age limits or tone down their shows.
    • Trans travellers: a 2023 law requires people to use toilets and changing rooms matching their sex at birth in many government buildings, schools and other public facilities, and gender-affirming care for minors is banned. Look for single-occupancy toilets in public buildings.
    • Climate: the 2025 cancellation of Pride, and Tampa Pride's year off in 2026, show how much the political and funding climate has changed. In Fort Myers the city worked with organisers on a permit for 2026, and the festival went ahead.

Cruising and apps: Fort Myers has no gay sauna or cruise club. Public sex and indecent exposure are offences in Florida, so do not treat beaches, parks or rest areas as places for sex. Apps are how most people meet. Meet first in a public place, tell a friend where you are going, keep valuables to a minimum and be wary of anyone who rushes you to a private address.

    Practical tips

    • Getting there: Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is south-east of the city. Tampa and Fort Lauderdale, with its Wilton Manors gay strip, are both a few hours' drive away.
    • Getting around at night: use Uber, Lyft or a taxi. Rascals and Cruisers are on opposite sides of the river, too far to walk between, and this is a car-built region. LeeTran buses run from about 05:00 to 21:45 on weekdays and Saturdays, and on Sundays only some routes run, from about 06:05 to 20:55, so there is no public transport late at night. Don't drive after drinking.
    • Daytime: walk the brick streets of the River District, visit the Edison & Ford Winter Estates by the river, or head to Fort Myers Beach or the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel.
    • Where to stay: on the beach side, Latitude 26 Waterfront Boutique Resort, 17990 San Carlos Blvd, faces the back bay; for an inexpensive base near Rascals, Baymont by Wyndham Fort Myers Central is on the same road at 4850 S Cleveland Ave. Winter (season) prices are much higher than summer ones.
    • Bring ID: bars check photo ID; the drinking age is 21.
    • Health and community: the Goldberg LGBTQ+ Center run by Visuality is a good first contact. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours, so go to a hospital emergency department straight away.

A few words to know: SWFL, Southwest Florida, used for everything from Pride to the news; the Cape, Cape Coral; South Cape, Cape Coral's bar and restaurant district; the River District, downtown Fort Myers; the Caloosahatchee, the river between Fort Myers and Cape Coral; RSW, the airport; snowbirds, winter residents from the north; season, the busy winter months; y'all, "you all", heard here as everywhere in the South.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a gay bar in Fort Myers?

Yes: Rascals, at 3758 Cleveland Avenue, is listed as open daily from noon to 2am, with drag shows and karaoke. The area's other gay bar is Cruisers Lounge, across the Caloosahatchee River in Cape Coral.

When is SWFL Pride?

The 2026 festival took place on Saturday 13 June on First Street in downtown Fort Myers, in front of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Pride has moved between October, November and June over the years, so check visualityswfl.org for the 2027 date.

Is drag still legal in Florida in 2026?

Yes. Drag itself is not banned, and the bars hold shows for over-21 crowds. In August 2026 a federal appeals court let Florida enforce its 2023 law that penalises venues admitting children to adult live performances, so all-ages drag events may be more cautious.

How do I get around Fort Myers at night?

By Uber, Lyft or taxi. LeeTran buses stop running at around 21:45 on weekdays and Saturdays and earlier on Sundays, so there is no public transport when the bars are busy.

Has Fort Myers Beach recovered from the hurricanes?

It is open but still rebuilding after Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Helene and Milton in 2024. The pier is being rebuilt and Crescent Beach Family Park reopened in August 2026; check that a hotel or restaurant is open before you book.
