About This Event

Southern Decadence is New Orleans's own gay high holiday — a Labor Day weekend that has turned the French Quarter into one of the biggest gay street parties in the American South every year since 1972. In 2026 it runs across the long weekend, roughly 3–7 September, and like the city itself it happens mostly in the street, in the heat, with a drink in hand.

The signature event is the Grand Marshals' Parade on the Sunday of the weekend. There is no fixed route in the Pride sense — it is a walking parade that gathers at the Golden Lantern, the old bar on the quiet end of Royal Street, and winds through the Quarter behind that year's Grand Marshals, all brass and beads and improvised costumes, ending up in the thick of Bourbon Street. It is free, loose, and very New Orleans.

The rest of the weekend is the Quarter's bars doing what they do best, cranked up: Bourbon Street packed shoulder to shoulder, balcony parties, and the gay bars around St Ann and Bourbon running non-stop.

Practical notes: this is New Orleans in September, which means serious heat and humidity and the tail of hurricane season — drink water, pace yourself, watch the forecast. The Quarter is walkable and you will not want to drive; stay in or near it if you can, and book early, because Decadence fills the city. The official programme and this year's Grand Marshals are announced closer to the weekend.

Practical Tips

Book a French Quarter room early — the closer you are to Bourbon Street, the easier it is to duck back for AC breaks between block parties.

Labor Day heat in New Orleans is no joke; bring a refillable water bottle and pace the daytime tea dances.

Catch the walking parade from Royal Street rather than Bourbon — you'll actually see the grand marshals before the crowd swallows them up.
