About this place Christopher Street Pier (Pier 45)

Pier 45, at the foot of Christopher Street in Hudson River Park, is one of the oldest and most storied gay gathering spots in New York. Since the 1970s the Christopher Street piers have been a place where the West Village's queer community — especially Black and Latino LGBTQ+ youth and the ballroom scene — came to sunbathe, socialise and cruise along the Hudson. Today the rebuilt pier is a manicured public lawn, policed and brightly lit, so it reads more as a daytime hangout and sunset meeting point than a discreet cruising ground. The surrounding waterfront paths and the restrooms at the base of Piers 45 and 51 keep a long-standing cruising reputation after dark. New York has no anti-gay laws and the area is very public, so the main considerations are the park's late-night curfew and ordinary city discretion rather than any legal risk. Come for the history and the river views; keep expectations realistic about how cruisy a floodlit public pier can be.
