About this place NYC AIDS Memorial
The NYC AIDS Memorial opened on World AIDS Day, 1 December 2016, in the small park at St Vincent's Triangle, Greenwich Avenue and West 12th Street. Across the street stood St Vincent's Hospital, which opened the East Coast's first AIDS ward in 1984 and treated more people with AIDS than any other hospital in the region before closing in 2010.
The 18-foot white steel canopy was designed by Studio ai. Beneath it, the granite paving carries lines from Walt Whitman's Song of Myself, arranged by artist Jenny Holzer. It takes five minutes to see, and it's free and open-air. Commemorations are held here on World AIDS Day. Stonewall and Christopher Street are a short walk south.
