About this place Stonewall Inn

The Stonewall Inn is the address the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement traces back to. On the night of 28 June 1969, patrons resisted what had been a routine police raid, and six nights of street protests turned a routine indignity into a public reckoning. Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie and dozens of others whose names history never recorded made the bar what it now is. The building at 53 Christopher Street was originally two storefronts. In 1967 the Mafia-run "private bottle club" installed a plywood door and painted the windows black; that dive of a bar is the one the uprising happened at. The current Stonewall Inn — reopened in 1993 — occupies the western half of the original footprint and is a working neighbourhood gay bar. Drag shows on Wednesdays, karaoke on Sundays, pool table in the back, cheap Buds on the bar. Nothing is roped off. On 24 June 2016, President Obama designated the Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park across the street, and the surrounding streets as **Stonewall National Monument** — the first US National Monument dedicated to LGBTQ+ history. The park side houses George Segal's *Gay Liberation Monument* (four life-size white bronze figures, 1980) and, since 2024, a small on-site NPS visitor centre. For visitors: come during the day if you want to read the plaques and photograph the façade, come at night if you want the bar. Both are the point. It's open, active, and inexpensive; the rainbow flags outside are permanent installation. The National Monument grounds are open 24/7 as public space.

We originally went just to see the historic sight, but it is genuinely a great place to hang out. Sitting outside in the early evening was enjoyable and fun. The staff were awesome. Also, great happy hour prices.

I was in the West Village enjoying a day off when I decided to stop by Stonewall for a few drinks. I know the history of Stonewall and imagined that Saturday would be a bit crazy, so I decided to sit outside. Truthfully, I wasn’t expecting much. Just after I got comfortable, Kristy came and greeted me with the warmest smile and took my order. She was super attentive and made sure that I was enjoying myself, even though I was by myself at the time. The atmosphere was amazing, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and it really reinforced the idea of community that I know Stonewall is famous for building. Just as I finished my last drink and closed out, a few friends decided to join me and I asked if we could be served by the other server, Damian, so that the both of them would make money from the table I’d been taking up for a few hours. Kristy was very understanding and happy to share business with Damian which, as a bartender of over 10+ years, I know is pretty uncommon. When my friends joined me, Damian proved that Kristy’s service was not a fluke or one-off thing. I’m typing this as we enjoy our second round together, and the vibes are so great that we intend to hang outside until they close, then we’ll be taking the party inside. It’s clear, at least where the two of them are concerned, that Stonewall creates an environment that is welcoming and fun for everyone involved. We will definitely be coming back sooner rather than later, and I look forward to the next time I get to experience Stonewall’s patio area when Kristy and Damian are working. It seems like it, but I hope they have as much fun working there as we had being their customers.
