About this place Julius'
Julius' on West 10th Street is a low‑key gay bar whose walls still echo a 1960s protest.
In 1966 the Mattachine Society staged a “Sip‑In” here, directly challenging a state law that let establishments turn away gay patrons. The episode earned the building a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today the place is nothing flashy—just wood paneling, a few booths, and a crowd that skews older and decidedly relaxed.
The kitchen sticks to the basics: burgers and other bar staples that taste better than they look. Julius' opens at 4 p.m. on weekdays, noon on weekends, and keeps its doors open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday; the weekend evenings are when the place fills up.
A short walk brings you to the Stonewall Inn, so you can swing by the two landmarks in one night.
