About this place Boiler Room

Boiler Room is a gay bar and club on East 4th Street, a no-frills spot for a night out in the East Village.

You know what you're getting here: a reliable neighborhood bar. It's been part of the city's gay scene for a long time, and the vibe is all about community and good times. Think of it as a low-key anchor in one of Manhattan's most historically queer-friendly blocks.

The East Village location means you're right in the thick of it, with other bars, restaurants, and places to go all around. It's an area with serious roots in New York's queer culture, whether you're just visiting or you live down the street.

They stay focused on what their regulars want, adjusting things to keep the crowd happy. For the latest on hours, what's on, or anything else you need to know before you show up, just hit their site at boilerroomnyc.com. Always smart to double-check, especially if you're coming from out of town or want to catch a specific event.

Spent time here with a friend who started with a cocktail; I had a basic beer. First round: $24. Then, with additional drinks (no cocktails), the beers magically became $12 apiece. If cocktails and beers are the same price, advertise them as such. With no written menu, it was impossible to understand the pricing structure, and $12 for a basic beer came as quite a surprise. The pricing felt less like a system and more like something being made up on the fly. I take no pleasure in leaving a negative review for a community bar, but this is not a good look.

The Boiler Room is one of those classic NYC spots that feels unapologetically authentic. No pretentiousness, no gimmicks — just strong drinks, good music, and a laid-back crowd. The atmosphere has that gritty East Village charm that’s getting harder to find in Manhattan. Perfect place to start or end a night out with friends. If you like dive bars with personality, this place is worth checking out.
