Russian & Turkish Baths

I’ve been wanting to check out Russian & Turkish Baths for years and finally made it in, and honestly it did not disappoint—it’s about as old school as it gets (over 100 years), they take your keys and wallet the second you walk in whether you’re ready or not and hand you a number like you’re part of the system now, downstairs there are three saunas and a couple steam rooms, the Russian sauna feels like you accidentally wandered into hell (in a good way), there’s a giant cauldron to dump water over your head, and at one point I had a Russian woman lightly beating me with oak branches which I didn’t have on my bingo card but somehow worked, upstairs there’s a café with pierogies and borscht plus a hidden outdoor deck to cool off between rounds, it’s about $60 to stay all day which is a solid deal and includes a robe, slippers, and shorts, and yeah… I’d definitely go back.

Amazing, atmospheric place with real character and history right in Manhattan! The steam treatment with oak leaves is incredible - one of the best experiences I’ve had. The staff are top-notch. Highly recommend!

Cool place with a lot of history. Nothing like a cold plunge after the steam room to jolt the senses. Also, go early before they get crowded.

The most quaint Turkish bathhouse, and the Russian sauna might as well transport you to Russia. Everyone is very respectable and most affordable in the city.

I paid extra for a man to whack me with soapy oak leaves in the hottest sauna, while occasionally pausing to dump cold water over both me and himself. Then I ate good borscht while admiring the celebrity photo wall. 10/10

It’s a vibes place! Not super fancy. Not super clean, but not filthy. Towels and lockers provided. Shorts if you forget. Food there. Feels like a social hour. With some good sweating. The leaf scrub is a fun thing to try. Don’t expect quiet or relaxed vibe here. Expect lots of talking and socializing. The people at the front desk and service provider make up their on tip for service. Be prepared for that. And it could be any random number above 20percent

This is an institution, and totally function over form. The Platza oak leaf treatment and mud scrub were enjoyable. The Russian room is by far the hottest and is made up of granite and has fresh water flowing from spigots filling up bucks to pour on yourself and the benches. The cold pool is a nice 39 degrees Fahrenheit. They have multiple dry and wet saunas of varying humidities. Think brass, and tile and endless towels. Just what I needed after a long day of traveling. Super clean, too!
