About this place Shadows on the Hudson

Shadows on the Hudson is a gay-friendly restaurant perched on a cliff 40 feet above the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, New York.

You’ll find it just 50 feet from the river’s eastern bank, which means the views are the main event. Look north and you’ll see the Mid-Hudson Bridge; south, the river stretches out, wide and long. This isn’t a place you go for a quick bite; you go to stare at the water.

As a gay restaurant in the New York region, Shadows draws both LGBTQ+ travelers and locals. It’s a comfortable spot, and the fact that it’s won awards suggests they care about the food as much as the setting. While the website doesn't spell out specific dishes, the kitchen leans American.

The address is 176 Rinaldi Boulevard in Poughkeepsie. Check out shadowsonthehudson.com for hours and menus. If you're looking for a meal with a view, and a place that explicitly welcomes everyone, this is it.

Attended with work group (13ppl). The atmosphere is swanky and awe inspiring. We dined on the patio overlooking the river. Service was pretty quick in beginning. Dinner for 13 arrived in under 20 minutes. We were checked on approx 3x. When it came time for the check, we waited over 30 minutes after declining dessert. Food was absolutely amazing, filling, from steaks to seafood to chicken. Excellent! Worth the splurge- the atmosphere alone is worth the pricing. An absolute gem in the Hudson Valley.

Food needed more seasoning and was expensive for what you do get. The desserts were not great but the ice cream was delicious. The view and the outdoor seating is very nice though. You pay for the scenery it seems. It has potential, I am hopeful that maybe it was a fluke that's the food was underwhelming. The server was nice but seemed overwhelmed, he did drop oyster water all over my purse. He did apologize and accidents happen it just was unfortunate.

This is the first one star review I have ever given to any business. Went to Shadows on the Hudson tonight with a party of six. The views of the Hudson River are picturesque offering a view that is unmatched anywhere in the Hudson Valley. The view is the only reason to patronize Shadows. The resturaunt earns its shadowy name by creating a storm cloud atmosphere. Inhospitable, robotic service. Completely inept and clueless manager that does not supervise the dining room, that is really an over sized banquet hall. Food that would be more at home in a seedy dive bar. I never send food back, however the Chilean sea bass that I ordered was a rubbery texture that only happens when fish has gone bad. Overpriced. Over rated. I would not feed this food to my dog. If I could rate negative stars I would. A true shame, as the potential for this stunning and unique space is unlimited. Undertrained staff, and soup kitchen service masquerading as fine dining. Do not go here, other than for a wedding that someone else is paying for.
